Hey all,

Going back to school to finish my BA and do pre-reqs/MCAT prep, building the next couple of years towards med school apps.

What are some good options during this time that are also good clinical experience? Some I've heard are EMT, phlebotomist, and scribe. What are some fairly simple to obtain certificates that will allow me to earn some cash while building my application resume in the medical field?

Thanks!

Scribing would probably be the easiest route of those you listed. You could also be staff at some homeless shelter or something like that which could help with serving individuals from different backgrounds than you.

If you need a job, though, don’t be picky and get some $$ in your wallet. Then try for the other ones when you have some financial room to breath.

EMT is prolly the most practical --- closest you can be to working like a real doctor and you will see some interesting things. Phlebotomist and scribe will expose you to a hospital setting and you'll see medicine in action but wont give you as much clinical skills as EMT.

Scribe is very applicable experience-wise. Interviewers loved hearing about my experiences and what I learned about the field by working in that position. It gives you a more realistic picture of a doc's job than shadowing or any of those other possibilities in my opinion. But some stickler schools may not consider it patient care experience since you aren't physically in contact with patients. Warning though - the money is ****.
