Better Chance of Acceptance With Early Interview?

Might seem like an obvious answer, but I was wondering your thoughts on this.

If an applicant gets an early interview (i.e. September or October, etc.) does that mean that the school "wants" them more? Or is it just because they got their information in earlier?

Tell me your thoughts.😀

I think early interviews aren't necessarily because they want you more, but because you got your stuff in earlier. Given the fact that most schools are rolling admissions, an earlier interview means you have a better shot at getting in. If I'm wrong, someone correct me. 😉

Actually, an early interview is both a sign of the adcoms looking favorably upon you and you turning in your stuff on time. I remember during my year, almost all of the pre-meds that I knew in my class applied to Wash U med school (since we attended the undergrad). It was almost as if an invisible line existed between those that interviewed before October (or some month around then) and those that interviewed after. Everyone, and I mean everyone, that I knew that was invited to interviewbefore October got in, and everyone that I knew that was invited to interview after October got put onto a wait list. I knew one student who got in off of the waitlist after that. A lot of schools will just sit on your application and possibly grant you a later interview if they aren't so sure about you. Most med schools like to fill their classes early in the process.

Wow! I sure hope you're right ckent, and that's not just a weird statistical anomaly. I'm getting interviewed at my first choice in a month! 🙂

Getting interviewed early is a great sign. It means that the school is very interested in you.

While some schools will swear up and down that it doesn't matter when you're interviewed, I am almost certain that your chances of being admitted are greatest when you're interviewed early (i.e. September and October).

especialy if its rolllig....i'd rather have to compete for 1 in 180 seats over 1 in 15 seats...

even though i'll have to miss a bunch of classes, I'm scheduling mine as early as possible.

The earlier you interview, the more spots are open. So the greater are your chances. Unless that is, if the school has non-rolling admissions.

I don't know just how much it matters. Obviously, early interviews can definitely bode well for your chances, but it depends on the school and on other factors. For example, I got an invite in August for an interview, interviewed during the first two weeks of their interview season, and was exiled to deep down the waiting list. Same thing happened at another school, sort of--I completed my file in early October, and less than a week later I had an interview invite. Result? Put on hold, and rejected in April. However, the school where I matriculated interviewed me in mid-February, despite the fact that my file was complete there since approximately September.
