BID versus Mayo?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
go to Mayo so I can have your BID spot!! :laugh: I live right down the street from BID..

all kidding aside, I've met grads of both programs who were incredibly happy with the training they received and matched well in fellowships. I think it depends on your personal situation.. If you are married and have a spouse with a flexible job or who stays home with the kids, or if you don't care for cities, I'd go with Mayo, since you like the program better anyway. If you are single or have a spouse/fiancee who needs to be in an urban area for a job, or are couples matching, or prefer urbia/suburbia, I'd pick BIDMC. Although Boston and BID don't seem to have a great rep on here, I have enjoyed living here for the past 4 years and would love to stay on (or near), and my ID rotation at BID was fun with amazing clinical exposure (though ID isn't my thing).

Thanks for the input! Is it true that BID does not have a great reputation here? I thought otherwise...After all, it's an academic Harvard affiliate with very good residents. Did you get your interview there yet?

the feeling is that MGH=BWH>>>>BID in boston.

it is felt that BID is overrated due to its affiliation with Harvard and that it is more on par with NY programs like NYU/Mt. Sinai rather than Columbia/Cornell.

anyway that is just what some people think.

one final point, if you are from texas, i would caution you about the winters in new england. i see no reason in going up there unless you had compelling reason. i can understand going there for MGH/BWH but BID is questionalbe at best.

hey, thanks for asking, still no word from BID; I'm going to type up a letter of interest tonight, and possibly consider asking my letter writer who is on the BID faculty to inquire if she has time and I don't hear. Anyway, I was referring more to the reputation of BIDMC on SDN than in Boston. Although BWH and MGH are considered the top hospitals here, all of the residents at the BWH, BID, MGH, and even BU, greatly respect each other and work together at different affiliates (I posted more on this elsewhere). bof makes a good point that I wrote about as well on the BI vs. Yale-NHH thread; do you want to be at a program that is the only game in town with regard to a geographical area, or is it OK (or even preferable) to share the load with other major medical centers? Interview days and second look days should help clarify these things, as there are so many good programs out there. I know that my impressions have changed with just 3 interviews (with the exception of Brown, which I thought I'd like and very much did).. I wasn't sure I'd like UMass or Worcester at all, but now this program is a serious contender for one of my top 3 choices! just an example, but good luck..

oh, bof definitely has a point about the New england winters, but if you're referring to Mayo-Rochester, the winters there are no picnic either. But I have to admit that Mayo at least had the sense to put in underground tunnels, while stupid Bostonians (acknowledged, I am one) seem to enjoy jogging with minimal clothing in the frigid weather.🙂 This winter is not too bad though, most days highs in the 40's and 50's with no changes expected over the next week or so.

As far as prestige goes, this would be my ranking:

mayo=mgh=bwh>columbia>bidmc=cornell>nyu=mt sinai

but that is just my opinon.

that is not how i would recomend ranking them though. it depends on your personal interests, where you want to live, who you want to work with, if you want a life, etc.
