This is my second time applying. I am reasonably qualified (34,3.8, top ugrad, good ecs), and was obviously upset and somewhat surprised about not getting in. I am wondering if my failure during this past app cycle is fair game to discuss as one of my biggest challenges.

If I do pursue this topic, I would avoid sounding entitled and steer clear of statements such as "I deserved to get in" or "I was so surprised I didn't get in." Rather, I would focus on the hard work I put forth and my overwhelming desire to be a physician, and having my dreams taken away from me was difficult.

Whatchyall think?

Is not getting into medical school on your first try the biggest challenge you have ever faced? I'm a reapplicant too so of course you are free to look for other opinions, but to me it seems like you'd come across as someone who hasn't really dealt with a lot of adversity. Almost like you're used to getting your way. I think it would be really difficult to not sound entitled, even if you steered away from the obvious phrases you mentioned. Just my .02.

I think this post is quite relevant. I would say no, simply because the the reapplication challenge has no clear conclusion yet. (you haven't gotten into medical school). I think this doesn't make it as strong of a challenge essay as other challenges where you can show the adcom that you grew as a person and applied what you learned to change the outcome.

Write it like this and you'll simply sound like a typical hyper-entitled 20 something.

You're going to have to come up with something better than "I didn't get in on the first try".

Okay, yeah I can understand that. Thanks for the advice.

What schools did you apply to and how many? If you had good ECs with those stats it is a little odd. Did you have any interviews?
I would probably revise your school list for next year if you applied to "more competitive" med schools

I think it would be pretty difficult to write that essay without sounding like what Goro said. Assuming your ECs aren't non-existent, I am guessing it came down to where you applied. Did you consult MSAR online before making your selections?

Didn't apply to a lot of schools (somewhat top heavy, too), app got sent out late for reasons outside my control. 4 interviews, 4 wait lists

I'm applying much more broadly this time, and my application is being submitted earlier.

yup late and poorly chosen schools will do that.

you have learned from it and can now capitalize on it... good luck

You haven't resolved that challenge yet, so no, it wouldn't be a good topic

I actually think it's a good topic as long as you don't sound entitled (which I think could be very hard to pull off but if you did, it would be good). I am sure you will get in this cycle if you apply broadly those because your stats are great
