Biggest waste of time ugrad course?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
English Composition and English Literature are the two most useless classes I've ever taken. I learned absolutely nothing, and I'm dumber for having wasted my time in lecture for them.

calculus 😛

never gonna use that $hit -- EVER!

African American Studies...by far, the dumbest class I've ever taken in my life. The usual response to this is..."Then why did you sign up for the class?" I didn't really have a choice...my school has an "American cultures" requirement that you MUST fulfill before you graduate...so I needed to take a class that fulfilled that requirement. All the classes that fulfill this requirement are complete fluff....ethnic studies, peace and conflict studies, African American studies, etc etc...**insert BS subject here**

the eng rings true here as well. I found it to be mostly useless drivel that wasted my time and did little to improve my writing ability.

It depends on the amount of innate skill and learned technique you went into college with. I found my creative writing, science fiction and poetry classes to be fascinating and increased the breadth of knowledge I would not otherwise have had.

The MOST worthless son of a female dog class I ever took were the following (yes, more than one):

Cultural Anthropology
Ethnic Studies
Economics

.. I say those were worthless because they relied mainly on common sense, even economics. Memorize the graphs and equations and you were happy. Cultural Anthropology was Tribal Porn 101.

Political Studies of the Middle East, I thought it would be intresting to know the culture in case I get activated. Also it met a requirement for my school, but man did it suck, statics is second.

Music In the United States.

One of my two B's...#$%*

fan of the literature.

not a fan of the calc.

I'm in tech writing right now, and so far it claims the prize. It's required for my college, and I just wasted a few hours finding a job on the internet that I could "fake" apply to with a B.S. in microbiology, to practice for when I graduate. Hmmm, what a bunch of crap. I'm going to med school next year . . . in the military. I'm not going to be applying for lab tech jobs anytime soon. +pissed+

religion: sharing the gospel

Psychology 136: Human Sexuality

The teacher was a total dumb-ass, and just preached the whole time. Among other stupid claims, he said that all behavioral difference between males and female is socialized, not genetic. Then he showed stupid videos that were pretty uniformly low quality. Like the film he used to cover the issue of gender reassignment for children born with mutilated genetalia was some POS from 60 minutes, rather than the one PBS did, which was far better. He also had some stupid agendized crap from the history channel.

I did less than 3 hrs studying, and no HW at all and got an A. I should have taken the junior college one; the people I knew who took it learned so much more, and didn't have that stupid nonsense to combat.

Worst of all, they didn't let us pick our lab partners. 🙁

(that last part was a joke--there was no lab component)

Yeah, I'd say my biggest waste of time was Intro Sociology.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY!

another vote for orgo... seriously, go ask your general practitioner what an ester is, and i'll bet my tuition that less than 5% get it right.

I have. He didn't know.

My Biggest BS Class: Russian Politics
What a waste.

Jason

intro to philosophy.
intro to drama.

for phil-
had it taught by a former nun. in las vegas. you see where this is going...

for drama-
taught by a guy who wore nut-hugger shorts for EVERY class. then proceeded to say if he didnt get everyone's paper to grade (for midterm 1), he'd cry. he ended up missing two papers from the class roster. he cried. oh, dear god, he cried. in front of class. and proceeded to continue his tearful dialogue as to why he needed everyones response to his teaching, in essay form, in the next lecture *moan* +pity+

Oh I love English and American Lit 🙂

For me the most wasteful class I took was intro to Computers

Marilyn

Statistics. I had no issues with the material, but the class was "taught" by my school's wrestling coach who simply couldn't, well, teach.

I had an AWESOME statistics class. The professor was great and the graduate student intructor was also fantastic...I even hung out with him at his place in LA during winter break. I thought the material was pretty useful too...seeing as T-tests, Chi-Squared tests, 2 sample Z-tests, etc are used in several different biological fields (epidemiology, population biology, and ecology to name a few).

I already listed the worst class I've ever taken above...but here are some more classes I thought were a monumental waste of life:

1) Herpetology (if you wan to learn about salamanders, frogs, and lizards...please tune into Animal Planet...do not waste your time and money on this course).

2) Intro to Sociology (an absolutely braindead class...I mean...BRAINDEAD...a relatively bright 6th or 7th grader could take this class at ANY accredited university in the US and get at least an A-).

3) Linguistics (why I signed up for this class during my freshman year is beyond me....regardless, I enjoyed the use of symbolic logic but hated drawing syntax diagrams).

4) Astronomy-The Planets...Why I signed up for this course...is beyond me...to this day..I am still very ashamed that I signed up...

MOST INTERESTING COURSES I've taken as an undergraduate:
1) Political Science-Intro to Comparitive Politics (I love stuff pertaining to international relations...so this stuff was great).

2) Classics-Roman Art and Architecture
To quote a Professor of Classical Studies at Cornell University..."A knowledge of classics has always been the foundation of a gentleman's education." 😉 Why not learn about the roots of modern western civilization as we know it? Many college campuses use Greco-Roman architecture...doric, ionic (no...not the chemical bond), and corinthian columns can be found on building all over the Berkeley campus...and other campuses throughout the country.

3) Epidemiology ...great stuff...with lots of clinical applications for folks who are sure that medicine is the right path for them (This class was 100% premed...as opposed to just 90% premed like most other biology courses...can't forget about those bio majors who go on to earn PhDs in biology, law degrees, etc)

Ecology.

If I had to spend one more lecture learning about the feeding patterns of limpets on a typical rocky seashore, I think I'd crack up.

Ditto this.

My class was ecology/population biology. The ecology half wasn't bad (boring prof, but otherwise fine). Population biology was the biggest waste of my time ever. Which could be why I slept through every class, every day.

comp I and comp II top my list, and i have to take technical writing soon, so that will probably take the lead.

agreed with intro to philosophy. my professor was the biggest geek. he introduced himself by saying that when he first got married his wife threatened to divorce him because he loved philosophy more than her. what a *****.
intro to computers was another dumb one but i had to take it to fit some tech requirement.
history of religion in america was also bad. the course was supposed to span from the 1500s to present time except my teacher was so damn slow we only managed to get up to the scond great awakening. every damn morning.. jonathon edwards. +pity+ 😴 😴

I took a computer programming course (c++) when I was a chemistry major way back in the day. If you think you are computer literate, take a programming course and you may think otherwise. It sure made me realize that the logic-part of my brain had been much more dormant than I had ever imagined.

Worst class ever 😴

Senior Seminar (required for Chem/Biochem majors in their senior year) 1 credit, pass/fail, both Fall AND Spring semesters. You have to do these stupid time consuming projects including a huge website research project with the MOST horrible group ever picked, and a bunch of crap on grad school/finding a job neither of which I need. And just try getting out of it b/c it won't work- last year a guy was accepted early into Yale Med and had only 2nd semester Sr. Sem to graduate and they wouldn't wave it so he could graduate in December. My IQ dropped 5 points just from having to sit in that class for 2 semesters.

Counterstrike ruined my undergrad career...

Biochemistry.

So not necessary for medical school. (didn't have it and got an A... saw poeple iwth majors/minors who struggled...)

Most underrated? A good Immunology course and a good physiology course...

I'm in human physiology right now...looks like a really interesting class.

biggest waste of time, you say? SOC 200, my school's gen-ed sociology class. we weren't so much "taught" as we were INDOCTRINATED by my fat-ass lesbian professor. things i learned in this class:

1) white people are the source of all strife, past and present, in the universe. if there is a sulfur atom on pluto that is unfairly bombarded by an oxygen atom, chances are that it was a caucasian oxygen atom.

2) rich people are the root of all evil. if you are rich, you are only rich because you are directly depriving others of the dignified lives that they deserve. money, we learned, is a very, very bad thing.

3) what is worse than a rich caucasian, then? a rich, caucasian MAN. did i already mention that my prof was a lesbian? oh well, i'm sure there's no connection anyway. men are terrible, and we constantly hold women back from their true callings, whatever they are. like Nutmeg said, it was claimed that ALL differences between men and women were due to socialization, because, as we all know, there are no natural differences between men and women. hell, a vagina only turns into a vagina because it is TOLD to do so by society! most vaginas would actually becomes penises if they weren't oppressed by the tyranny of our gender-based society.

oh yea, calc isn't doing me any favors now, either.

I have to say by far the biggest waste of time was arts and performance-computer app. We study VIDEO GAMES! and had to write stupid papers that had nothing to do with what we were doing in class, we had weekly quizzes, and 4 exams. I made an A- which pissed me off even more!

My waste of time courses

English Literature - an Essay Writing course was required and I can't understand why Science students still had to take a 2nd English course (either Literature or Non-Fiction). I think Technical/Business/Scientific writing courses would be more appropriate for Science students than English Literature or Non-Fiction.

Calculus, Physics, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry - boring, uninteresting, and never going to use it after the MCAT

Biology (Freshman year) - the ecology and evolution sections were boring and useless

Liberal Arts courses/Non-Biological Sciences Science courses - I hated having to take courses that were not related to my degree. The time wasted in these courses could be put to better use for things such as internships, research opportunities, and cooperative work placements.

Courses I enjoyed: Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Immunology, Human Anatomy/Physiology, Pharmacology.

The worse thing about literature is (btw, i agree w/you ) that it is required for graduation in our school!

Oh my gosh, this is so funny! 😀 I laughed for awhile...I think everyone has taken a course like this with this same professor...hahaha

Worst class for me was "cognitive psychology: the psychology of language." it was an upper div cognitive psych course that i took because it worked with my wanting only classes on tuesdays and thursdays...what a pain in the ass...not only was it hard but it SUCKED and was so dry and boring...it was more like a linguistics course...horrible, horrible stuff.

Western Art History for me so far.....

Venting felt good

I'll never understand or have any sympathy for people who hate learning. If you really hate learning this much, wtf are you trying to be a doctor? It's one thing to have a few subject you find dry or tedious, or to have had beef with some of your professors, but Jesus, does anything interest you? How can you not find ecology and evolution interesting? Is this a joke?

You should go to chiropractic school, or something of that ilk. I'm terrified by a doctor having this intense contempt for learning. O-chem does not lose its usefulness after the MCAT--nor does physics or gen chem or whatever, and you will fail at being a good doctor if you have contempt for your own learning process.

Learning is great. 👍 :horns: 👍

Music Appreciation- aghh a waste of time because she basically
read the textbook in class.
English I- took it during h.s and that lady hated h.s students.so had a tough time w/ her and w/ her attitude towards me and no matter how hard i worked could not get the grade i wanted.

Listen, premed for chiropractic school is no different than med/DO school. We take all the same basic science courses as they do. For this person to go to chiropractic school it would make no difference.

I guess what you are trying to say is that chiropractic school is easy. I'm here to tell you its not.

I have to echo sociology. I hated that class. The only thing that made it bearable was watching the teacher.....and watching the teacher. 😉

Since my transcript arrived late from my other school, I had the pleasure of taking the stupid class again.😡 🙄

Chorus was a waste of time as well. But, hey, at least it fulfilled my FA requirement.😀
