Chem-1 & Chem-2: Chemistry by Silberburg with supplemental material from the general chemistry book that our professor is under contract to write
Name of your undergraduate college: Illinois Valley Community College, Northern Illinois University or Illinois State University next year
Approximate OOS tuition for an undergraduate class at your college: IVCC is ~$85/CR so roughly $1200 a semester. State universities in IL run about $5500 a semester.

Chem: No textbook

I have often heard about the "no textbook" approach. Some professors say lecture notes are adequate, some rely on course pack, etc. How effective is this approach? Aren't you seriously handicapped by the absence of a textbook? Does a course pack or lecture notes adequately prepare you for the MCAT? Doesn't it hinder complete understanding of the intricacies of the course material?

Instead of a textbook, they simply composed a notebook of practice problems, lecture notes, and summary equation sheets. I don't think there is a ton to learn conceptually in gen-chem so I don't feel like I was at a disadvantage. As far as the MCAT goes, well I got a 12 on the PS section so I think it went okay. 😛

I HATED the textbook approach in gen chem I. in gen chem II I had a professor that relied mostly on her lecture notes--she would do tons of problems in class and then give practice problems SHE made, so we could prepare for exams. the textbook was only a supplement if you didn't understand something. i loved her lol, my gen chem I professor wasnt like that. you'd have to read the textbook and do the problems all on your own. all he would do in class was go over "concepts" which is useless in chemistry (not saying that concepts aren't important, but just saying explain things conceptually but then expecting us to solve difficult problems on exams isn't exactly the best approach). there are only a few core concepts in general chemistry, the rest of it is doing a ton of problems, like physics. orgo is a different story entirely, i liked the textbook approach in that class because it isn't mathematics based, that course is more like a bio course, in the sense that the concepts are the most important things (knowing how a reaction will/will not proceed helps you determine the mechanism, etc.). so no, in a nutshell, ill agree with asagacious, you will not be at a disadvantage. good luck!!

I think a no textbook approach would be interesting, but I would probably still get a textbook because I'm neurotic.
