Has anyone taken bio chem online? This is my last pre-req, and if I can take it online during the next year I won't have to wait another cycle to apply. Any suggestions on which university has the best online courses?

Although you can take them concurrently with organic at my university, the current prof won't let students.

I appreciate the input.🙂

Im taking the ISU online Biochem. Its a 2-part course. So far, its okay. Truth74 has taken it and said she did pretty well. A new instructor is teaching part I and he has totally revamped the test taking policies so Im not sure how things will play out. He's not very good at replying to questions/discussion posts either. Perhaps the original prof will take back over next semester. Either way its an option, looks like both sections are offered each semester. Heres the link

I took Oregon State's Online which wasn't great, but survivable (due to the curve.) I do NOT recommend taking it over the summer (which requires listening to recorded double lectures every weekday.)

I didn't like the prof, found the audio-video more than obnoxious (recorded actual clases from 2 years ago, and if something stupid happened like camera bumped, sound off, etc, it was not fixed/replaced/or redone.) Tests were hard and required a proctor. Had a 48 hour time frame for each test, which went to your proctor.

However, I got an A (set the curve) so it was ok.

I am taking it through UC-Berkeley Extension - it is very self-paced and not too bad. Be careful where you want to apply because some schools need a biochemistry with a organic chemistry as a prerequisite (in the fine print).

Oregon's does have o chem as a pre-req

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but if your school offers both online & traditional lecture-style classes (both have the same pre-requisites and same amount of credit but have different course numbers), do you think one is preferred over the other? I planned on taking the online option to free up my schedule, but then I heard that medical schools prefer that you take a live lecture course. Does anyone know if this is true for vet school?

ETA: UF has a distance learning biochemistry course with organic as a pre-requisite.

Tpad do you know if Berkeley requires both quarters of organic or can you take 2nd qtr concurrently?

This is so helpful, I can't thank you enough.

ps Sumstorm I am so excited for you. Congrats

I was just doing some research on this. Doesn't UC Berkeley's extension course list o-chem as a recommended pre-req but not a concrete one? I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Also, not to change the subject, but would an online Genetics class from berkeley suffice for the upper division genetics pre-req for most schools?

I'm currently enrolled in both the Biochem and Genetics online courses through Berkeley extension.

Biochem has O-chem as a recommendation, but Davis is counting it as upper division (as in it requires o-chem as a prereq). But be aware...they don't check your prereqs so I don't think it will be a problem at all to take o-chem concurrently. That's what I'm doing 🙂

Genetics is another course that Davis is considering upper division. It is due to the course numbering. I believe courses numbered 100+ are upper division and lower than 100 are lower division according to Berkeley extension.

First make sure if there's even an indication that it is an online course on your transcript... I know my school, NCSU, just recently changed the way they recorded transcripts so that their online courses have no different notation.

Unless you are willing to be deceptive on the VMCAS, it won't matter whether the school lists it as online/distance/etc, since the VMCAS does ask you to indicate if it is.

I took it through KSU last summer and I actually kind of liked it. It wasn't hard but it wasn't a piece of cake. As long as you keep up with the assignments, it is easy to get a good grade.

Ah, I stand corrected. I wasn't aware that they asked you to clarify past what was indicated on your transcript.

I don't know for sure, so I'd check with the schools you are applying to, but I took both genetics and physics online and listed them as an online courses on VMCAS and none of the schools I applied to ever even asked about it...(they aren't listed as an online course on my transcript). As long as you do well in the course I dont think the school should care. If anything its HARDER to get a solid grade in online courses IMO because it takes a lot more diligence and motivation (both good traits in a vet student!) Just my 2cents.

I took genetics and biochem and animal nutrition. I was only accepted to NCSU, so I don't know if this had any influence or not. I do agree that it was harder for me to get an A in those courses than in my lecture courses. I could understand some schools having concerns, mostly if they want a lab with the course. However, I did get in. And I did indicate they were online on VMCAS.

I just finished that class. I brought my gpa down because I got an A-. I didn't realize until I got my transcript that they use the +/- grading convention for the course because the instructor's syllabus didn't indicate that. There is no curve and you have to have 94% or better to get a straight A. The final is 60% of the total grade. The instructor returned all of the other course work but did not return or provide feedback on the final.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have decided to take the course offered through UC Berkeley next winter qtr. I figure with one qtr of Ochem under my belt I may stand a better chance of getting a better grade.

I am just finishing my gen chem series and will be very happy to see that chapter end. Final is next friday for 2nd qtr chem, so far I have a A in lecture and final A in lab. So keeping my fingers crossed to finish out the year strong.

I checked with WSU and they accept the online course from Berkeley. YEAH!! I can't believe I will have all my pre reqs in this year.

I have decided to apply this cycle even though I won't be done with my degree, even if it is for the experience. There is always that slim chance.

You guys rock!!!
Thanks for all your help!😍
