I'm sure this has been answered many times but I can't find it anywhere...

I have taken Biology I w/ lab, microbiology w/ lab, and anat & phys I & II w/ lab. All schools ask for 8 semester hours of biology. Are they referring to BIO II for the 2nd semester or am I good to go?

depends on the school. Some will be okay with any 8 credits from biology department... others will be very strict and want 8 credits just for basic bio 1 & 2

Okay, so I am getting mixed replies from schools. Some say its okay and others say it isn't.
So here is the plan. On my application that I will submit on June 1st, I will say that I am planning on taking Biology II next summer (2012) right before dental school hopefully starts. Before the summer 2005 semester starts I hope to know if I am accepted or not to dental school. If the school I choose needs this class then I'll go through with it, if the school I want to attend doesn't require this class then I'll call them and tell them that I won't be attending Biology II.
Is that a good idea?

the school will likely make you sign a form, stating what classes you are currently enrolled in, and what your future plans are. They will require you to let them know if your stated plan changes.

If you say you are taking a class, they will want you to take that class.

You don't need to say that on June 1st on AADSAS..... If you get accepted this coming cycle from a school that will require bio 2, they WILL stipulate it on the acceptance letter saying:
"Congratulations, you've been accepted, yada yada yada, this is a conditional acceptance, you have to still complete your pre-req bio course"

IMO, I think you shouldn't wait till summer to take this class, take it either this fall or Spring. Summer is such a close time to when dental school starts.

Ohhhhhh. I've applied already I thought they made you fill out your upcoming semesters? Guess not.
So I guess the plan would be to fill out the AADSAS as usual. Then keep close contact with the schools in which this all might be a problem. If one of those are to accept me then I'll worry about completing the course. How does that sound?

well you CAN fill out AADSAS with future courses... but you might run into trouble where they might expect you to complete the courses (even if they aren't intended for the pre-req completion).... Like in the acceptance letter, they sometimes stipulate "the student must complete all courses he/she planed to take before the acceptance"

Just take Bio 2. It's not that hard and it will solve your problem. Just my 2 cents though.

Easier said than done. I've graduated and moved away from my university. So maybe its not the easiest option.

Ah, out of the schools you called, how many required it? I would say your current plan sounds good then. If you get accepted, just take it at a nearby school.

The only one that has said they have a problem with it is Oregon.
But, this happens a lot at my university, people duck out of Bio II because it is only 3 credits because the lab is not offered with the class. It seems harder to design a lab around an ecology/zoology/evolution course. Anybody else ran into this problem?

Im curious tho... how were you able to take upper division bio courses without bio 2? I remember all the heavy hitters (biochem, microbio, anatomy, histology, pretty much all) required both bio 1 and 2 be taken.

I don't know they just don't require it at my university.
I remember Biochem pre-reqs being Chem I & II, OChem I, and Bio I. Thats all.
Microbiology was just Bio I. And maybe some intro chem.
Anatomy and Physiology I & II was only some intro to chem class.

It doesn't seem like these upper level classes have too much to deal with zoology/ecology/evolution. But, I guess EVERYTHING has to do with evolution. It seemed fine though.

doc toothache,
I'm not sure you read the other posts. But it seems like about 90% of the dental schools are okay with you taking other upper level biology courses instead of Bio I. I have 16 credits of bio and most of them seem cool with it.

Isn't that the key word? Moreover, if you do not have that in writing... guess what?
