among mammals there is a noticeable relationship between body size and metabolic rate. Which of the following series best illustrates this relationship, going from lowest metabolic rate to highest metabolic rate?

1.mouse-man-dog
2.elephant-horse-man
3.rabbit-man-elephant
4.mouse-dog-man
5.mouse-man-elephant

I don't remember neither cliff nor KBB going over this... or I totally forgot.
The answer is 2. I just guessed bigger= higher metabolic rate, which was incorrect.

anyone can explain this?

I learned in Bio 2. Bigger mammals have slower metabolic rates, and smaller mammals have faster metabolic rates. It's as simple as that.

Go to Destroyer page 310 and look at number 341. You should have a little note there 😉

Correct. The reason why it's answer # 2 is because bigger animals have slower metabolic rates, while smaller mammals have higher rates.

I would rather say that the bigger the size the higher the bmr. It only reverses when you are looking at /kg weight. Perhaps you missed that part on your question.

Worst case scenario on this question just use process of elimination. 3, 4, and 5 all go from smallest to largest. 1 goes from smallest to largest to middle. 2 is the only one that goes from one extreme to the other without another answer duplicating that specific trend. With your initial guess 3, 4, or 5 all would have worked.

I remember learning about this allometry stuff in physiology. This question can also be tweaked by bringing in factors (other than body size) that affect metabolic rate (MR):

1. Temperature (direct/positive relationship with MR)
2. Endotherms (of a given size) have much higher metabolic rates than ectotherms of an
equivalent size.
3. Endocrine effects such as thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism=decreased MR; hyperthyroidism=increased MR)
4. Age (inverse relation with MR; i.e. old people have lower MR)

I sensed a discrepancy between what Slyguy and rocky90 were saying so I read up on this website: http://courses.washington.edu/biol462/2005 met II.pdf
Scroll down to III. It explains the difference between mass-specific metabolic rate (which is what slyguy and mrsummerlin were talking about I think) and whole animal metabolic rate (which is what rocky was talking about).

Sorry to beat the dead horse. Hope I was able to explain you original question. Good luck!
