What is the answer that best completes this statement: a common anscestor is
a) one that is very commmonly in the fossile record
b) one that is shared by two or more organisms
c) one that has no distinguishing features and is there for very 'common'

Q. Read the following statements then answer the question below
I. all organisms inherit their features from their ancestors
II organisms resemble their most recent anscestors more closely than distant ancestors
III Over time evolution occur and new features appear

which of these statements are accurate?
a) I and III
b) II and III
c) all of the above
d) none of the above

Answer to first question is B.

As for the second, even though it is horribly worded, I think it is C.

Evolution chapter of Cliff's AP Biology states the following:

"Inheritance of acquired characteristics described how body features acquired during the lifetime of an organism (such as muscle bulk) could be passed on to offspring. This, however, was incorrect. Only changes in the genetic material of cells can be passed on to offspring."

Based on the interpretation of the statement above, I would conclude that answer choice B is correct for question number 2, as not all the features are inherited from their ancestors. There is a possibility of mutation as well that could lead to a phenotype that was never acquired by any of the ancestor of the career. make sense?

I thought the correct answer is d, none of the above
Over time evolution occur and new features appear? It is not always and also new features will never ever appear, just modified version of pre-existing character

But I still don't find any problems with choice B

what do you think guys?

my comments = blue

What is the answer that best completes this statement: a common anscestor is
a) one that is very commmonly in the fossile record
b) one that is shared by two or more organisms <---this one
c) one that has no distinguishing features and is there for very 'common'

Q. Read the following statements then answer the question below
I. all organisms inherit their features from their ancestors
not true at all, some organisms go thru mutations in a single generation

II organisms resemble their most recent anscestors more closely than distant ancestors
true, this just makes sense

III Over time evolution occur and new features appear
duh, this is obviously true

which of these statements are accurate?
a) I and III
b) II and III <----this one
c) all of the above
d) none of the above

First question is B.

Second question I think is B also not just because of mutations but also because of phenomena such as horizontal gene transfer which is when genetic material is incorporated from one organism to the other where the organism incorporating the material is not the offspring of the organism the material came from. I don't think you can argue that evolution does not occur or that new features do not arise. With the way that organisms are thought to have evolved all the domains (archaea, bacteria, and eukaryia) are all thought to have evolved from the last common universal ancestor, so you cannot say that novel features did not arise as evolution occurred. At least that's the way I see it.

First is B

What is the answer that best completes this statement: a common anscestor is
a) one that is very commmonly in the fossile record
b) one that is shared by two or more organisms
c) one that has no distinguishing features and is there for very 'common'

Q. Read the following statements then answer the question below
I. all organisms inherit their features from their ancestors
Obviously true, since they inherit genes, which make up for their phenotypes
II organisms resemble their most recent anscestors more closely than distant ancestors
True
III Over time evolution occur and new features appear
NEW FEATURES DO NOT APPEAR, are not caused, BY EVOLUTION, they are caused by mutations. New features are SELECTED for by evolution

So I and II are true, III is false. Although given the choices, it may just be that the question is very terribly worded, so I would probably pick C.

Kyle, you are still studying for the DAT? 😛
I really admire your resilience.

I hope you get into a great school!
