1) Which of the following would be a dominant species in a climax community?
a) mosses
b) sun-loving trees
c) shrubs
d) annual grasses
e) shade trees

2) Which of the following affects plasma concentrations of calcium?
a) Cortisol
b) Vitamin D
c) Aldosterone
d) Thyroxine
e) Glucagon

3) Gibberellins
a) inhibit lateral buds
b) stimulate fruit ripening
c) determine timing and differentiation of new cells
d) stimulate rapid stem elongation
e) All of the above

I thought #1 would be "b".. but wouldn't sun-loving trees also end up being shade trees? Maybe a dumb question.. haha maybe I've been studying too long. For #2 I'm not sure really.. and for #3 I thought "e" but was unsure.

What do you all think? thanks in advance.

I feel 1 is e because shade trees end up producing shade which they would benefit from.

For 2, I know vitD affects calcium absorption. For calcium I really thought calcitonin or PTH would be listed. Thyroxine comes from the thyroid which is right next to the parathyroid which is where PTH comes from. But since it asks which of them AFFECTS the plasma concentration, I would go with vitD. Since vitD affects absorption, the plasma concentration would be reduced without vitD.

For 3 I have no idea but a quick google search makes me think just D. I couldn't find anything that suggested the other ones were right. So it's DEFINITELY D but could still be E...

1) E

2) B.....PTH does TWO things: it removes calcium from the bone and brings it into the blood, and it also sitmulates vitamin D to form into its active form so calcium is absorbed better in the small intestine. {people who lack calcium and take calcium supplements would not benefit from it without vitamin D. It is KEY to calcium absorption}

3) Gibberellins
a) inhibit lateral buds <------- AUXINS
b) stimulate fruit ripening <----ETHYLENE
c) determine timing and differentiation of new cells <--KINETIN
d) stimulate rapid stem elongation <---- GIBERELLIN
e) All of the above <---all of the above are plant hormone

hope this helps!

1) E

2) B

3) D

All of this was covered in the Kaplan book if you have it
