Hi everyone,

I'm studying for the DAT which I am supposed to take on May 29 and I feel like I am completely overwhelmed with the bio. I am going through cliffs ap bio and Barron's and everything seems like I've seen and knew it before but there is just so much to memorize. Should I just keep doing what I am and pray that I score well?

Thanks

I've made notecards, and I noticed I am SUBSTANTIALLY knowing more than when I did not use notecards. It's more engaging. Also, don't forget Destroyer, it's your best friend!

I am a true believer in pray, but when it comes to scoring high on the DAT? I think the only way to score high is hard work and knowing the material..From what you posted I would consider rescheduling..This is not a test you want to take again! You need more time.

Just my 2 cents

Take care..Nancy

I'm not completely lost when I am studying. I am just saying that compared to the other sections of the DAT that the bio seems like anything is fair game. It is just a lot more memorization than any other section and I get confused on what is most important on knowing thoroughly. I am just going to finish reading cliff's and barron's and do the dat destroyer twice along with practice tests and hopefully I will feel more confident.

Hi Atom,

You have an excellent plan. Spend most of your time focused on learning and less time on testing. You will have enough time if you are properly prepared. Know ALL the work in the DAT Destroyer, nothing was added to the book that was not absolutely necessary.

As I have stated many times, there are MANY versions of the DAT, and you have to prepare accordingly. Know the Destroyer cold! The Destroyer is very challenging but so is the DAT!

Keep working at it, I promise it will get easier..

Wishing you the best!

Nancy

If rescheduling isn't an option, I'd just try to understand the big picture for bio, instead of worrying about the small details you don't know yet. In my opinion, knowing a lot horizontally is better than knowing a lot vertically for the DAT, if you get what I mean.
But to answer your question about "not knowing which topics to know thoroughly," what I did was look at the 2009 DAT user manual. It gives you the approximate number of questions per topic. It's a bit outdated but I don't think the newer versions don't have the question breakdown and the question makeup is quite similar still. I focused on the topics with most questions on the test (pretty obvious eh?). If you're out of time and don't have the luxury of memorizing all the stupid euglenoids and echinodermata, which makes up only like 3 to 4 questions, you'd rather make sure you know everything about genetics (molecular, chromosomal, experimental, etc) which makes up 7 to 9 questions. Something along those lines! Hope I helped.

I would reschedule if it is an option for you. Do NOT take the exam underprepared. That was my biggest mistake, and I paid for it. Second time I took it I was ready for it and did well. I went from a 17 to a 28 on the biology. I agree with you that anything in the biology is "fair game" but destroyer really does an AMAZING job narrowing down what you need to know. Know it well and you will easily score 20+ in all the sciences

I agree with this, Destroyer is really high yield. If you know what's in Destroyer well - and I mean really have an understanding the solutions, the answer choices, all of it - there's no way you won't score 20+. It does a really good job of exposing you to the full scope of the exam.
