Anyone here took bio chem before orgo or concurrently while taking orgo?

And for those who are currently taking biochem or have taken biochem, do you think orgo is a must for biochem?

as an biochem major, I can tell you that you'll be just fine in biochem w/o orgo. It would help, esp at the start, but you can work through it in biochem.

there is very little orgo in biochem. what is in there is stuff you should be able to pick up very easily anyway. i took biochem a few semesters before orgo and was just fine.

I'm just a *******, but I wouldn't do it. I took a physics class once out of order and they were teaching it assuming you knew something from the other class, but I didn't so I didn't do to hot.

I second this. It is possible without orgo.

Just basic ochem will be sufficient, which you probably learned in general chemistry anyway, like what's a ketone.

I took biochem before ochem and I did fine. If it is metabolic processes portion of biochem you are taking (at my school, it was divided into quarters) then its pretty much straight memorization anyway of structures and enzymes. Cake.

My school requires that you have taken at least one semester of orgo before taking biochem so it might be advantageous to take orgo first. It may not be required or have a lot of organic in that classwork itself, but orgo opens you up to a different way of thinking so it might be that different perspective on things that would benefit you.

I would recommend asking the potential professor. OChem II was a pre-req for biochem at my college, and there is NO WAY in h*ll anyone would have passed without OChem II. Too many mechanisms that depended on knowing OChem II. Our exams were lengthy, NO multiple choice, all written essay and reaction mechanisms, and extremely detailed. No one ever finished an exam before time was up. I'm a chem major and I worked my *ss off in this class (made PChem appear simple in comparison!)

On the other hand, I have a friend who FAILED OChem II (failed like no hope of passing even if she had gotten 150% on the last TWO exams!). She took Biochem at a state university during the summer and got "an easy A". Her exams were multiple choice, scantron, and extremely basic. Said she didn't really use any OChem stuff at all.

Bottom line - ask around where you are.

for those who have taken bio chem what text did you use and what text would you recommend?

I wouldn't take it out of sequence. At our school, all quarters of orgo are required before anyone can enroll in biochem. Anyway, what would be the purpose of taking it earlier?

If you're really determined, you can pull it off. I'd say it would be a bit more difficult if you did not complete at least one quarter/semester of organic. If you did, then at least you'll be familiar with structures, mechanisms, synthesis, and pathways (a minor portion of which is in biochem).
