I graduated from UMass a couple years back, and am looking to apply for maltriculation in 2013. My advisors recommended I take a biochem course before applying. They say this is because many D schools are recommending it now. Thoughts?

These advisors have been at this for a long time, and they have a strong reputation for giving amazing advice and helping people get accepted, so I am planning on taking their advice. But, do most people applying here have a biochem course at some point on their undergrad transcript?

I was a bio major, yet never did take a course from the biochem department. I might take one online from somewhere.

Yeah I would definitely suggest it. I'm in it right now and most schools say that it is a recommended course. You might as well learn it in undergrad because you will be taking it your first year in D school. It will give you a good solid foundation of the material.

Really? I'm required to take it at my school. I wonder if it's more common to not have to take it.

It made a transition from recommended-req to required-req for quite a number of schools today.

Look into the DMD/DDS admission for the schools you are interested and see what their pre-reqs are. A decent number of my choices have biochemistry I as required-req.

Yeah. I took classes that had biochem material in them for sure. But, nothing right from the biochem department. Apparently they like to see a class that is taken in the department.

Which leads me to my next question. What level class should I be looking to take? Some 500 level class? I haven't taken bio classes in a few years, so jumping into a high level class like that should be fun times. Haha.

BC isn't required specifically at my school for biology majors... but it was in a group of about about 10 classes that I had to choose one from.

I would say that biochem is absolutely necessary unless you're going to pick to apply from the thin list of schools that don't require it.

It's always interesting to see different schools' requirements. What about thermo? (Not to hijack the thread or anything...)

nope, definitely does not sound familiar... at least not for my concentration of organismal biology. however, it could be required for one of the other concentration of biology majors at KU
