I have taken 3 quarter of general biology, with 2 quarter of general biology lab. I also took an upper division biochemistry lab course. I was wondering if the biochem lab would count as my 3rd quarter of bio lab. The biochem lab was listed under the "Molecular and Cellular Biology" department. We had 10 hrs of lab a week and the experiments included working with protein assays, microarrays, running gels, and purifying proteins.

Would that count as my las biology lab? I need to know so I know whether i should take another bio course next quarter. Thanks!

from what I heard, biochemistry lab counts as chemistry lab, not biology. thats what they told me at uc davis anyways

That's a good question for an advisor at your school.

It's not just UC Davis; I remember reading a thread like this in the past and finding that AMCAS will list biochem and lab under chemistry with pretty much no exceptions. (@bravofleet4, not even department listing, unfortunately; it's based on subject material.)

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that some schools won't be flexible or that your school's committee might not have a workaround. I'm unfamiliar with quarter/trimester system and it seems that you might have more flexibility with this than at semester schools.

Good luck!

it's tricky only b/c at my undergrad institution biochemistry is a required course for all biology majors and isn't even considered an upper-division course. Of course, we're only talking about the lecture and not the lab. Then later you can take an upper-division bio lab in biochemistry, so most students at my school wouldn't even consider the possibility that biochemistry falls under the chemistry.
