I'm applying for the 2012-13 cycle and I know that biochem is required for one school I want to apply to (DMU), but I haven't taken it and I already graduated last summer. I'm wondering whether it would be worth trying to get into the Physiological Biochemistry class at my old university as a non-matriculated student, or if the Distance Medical Biochemistry class through UNECOM would be sufficient?

I wouldn't be able to take the course until this fall either way, and I'm going to be working full-time as well which makes the flexibility of the online class appealing, but I don't want to go that route if it would be viewed poorly by adcoms. Thoughts?

I emailed DMU about taking an online biochemistry class, but haven't heard back yet. Will let you know if I hear anything.

I am also planning to take a biochem course since I didn't take one during undergrad and some schools require it. My plan is probably to take it some time next spring if I get into a school that requires it, so that I won't have to take it if I end up going to a school that doesn't require it.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. I guess I had assumed they'd be okay with it (even if it wasn't the preferred route) but now I see that they're not on UNECOM's list of "accepting schools" 🙁

The list on UNE's website said there were other programs that accept the class that aren't on the list. Maybe DMU is one of them. If I don't get an email by tomorrow, I'm going to call DMU. I noticed that a lot of admissions emails to med schools go unanswered.

Edit: I just checked my email and I got a response 20 minutes ago. I asked if either UNE's biochem online course ("Medical Biochemistry") or Berkeley Extension's ("Introductory Biochemistry") would fulfill the biochem requirement, and the person who replied said they would. 🙂

Awesome, thanks for the update!

Good to hear, thanks for taking the time to find out/letting us know! 😀
