Biochem Online?

I would call some schools and ask them if an online biochem course is frowned upon, especially if it doesn't require organic.

If you find one that is good, can you post it far and wide here?? Biochem is something I would like to review at least annually.
hey how good is the online IMMUNOLOGY or Genetics Course offered by the University of Berkely extension program. I saw that it is self paced. (i.e we can start any time and stop anytime. sounds cool! he he he).
And i searched the webpage but cudnt find tuition. does anyone know how much they charge for out of state residents.

I took the UC online genetics course about a year ago, and even though it was self-paced, it was comprehensive (and challenging)! It took me 3 1/2 months to get through while working full-time. I believe the tuition is around $700 or $800 regardless of where you live. Hope that helps.
Was that course accepted as credit course. and does it shows on the transcript as an ONLINE COURSE. Or it appears as a regular course.
Regarding an online Biochem Course:

I took this course and it was difficult but I did okay. You have to find a proctor to monitor your tests but other than that, everything else can be done online. The course is three credits and it satisfies most schools biochemistry requirment, at least it does at Iowa State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. I think the cost was around $1,000 when I took it a year ago.

Regarding the UC Genetics course, UC Davis does accept it (California schools have reciprocating credit agreements - you can see them at www.assist.org). I can't speak for other schools because I only applied to UC Davis 🙂 On my transcript it didn't say "online", just the course number, name, and that it was through UC Berkeley Extension.
No idea why that is. Maybe a typo?
I am about 3 weeks into the biochem course from berkeley. So far it has been challenging. There are 11 assignments with a writing assignment for each, except #6 which is the midterm (not proctored). The final is a proctored comprehensive exam. The instructor provides very timely feedback and reiterates what is important from each lesson. I am somewhat worried about the final though. The cost is 740.00 and it is self paced. You have up to 6 months to complete the material and you must be enrolled in the course for at least 3 months in order to receive credit. Virginia/Maryland will accept this course as long as you take it for a letter grade vice pass/fail. good Luck and I hope this helped a bit.
Ok...maybe I am being snobbish here with a BS in Biochemistry (yes...I am masochistic...), but a Biochem course that doesn't require an Organic pre-req is like an engineering course without a math pre-req. Its absurd. What the heck do they tech you if you don't know the basics? I would steer clear of it, myself.
Unless it is just a rinky-dink "Survey of Biochem" class where you barely need to know any chem anyway (which I don't know. I suppose online classes usually are, though).....Biochem is basically applied Organic Chem. I do not see how you can do one without knowing the other, without making it very confusing.

I am taking human physiology through the UC Berkeley extension. It's pretty tough with the amount of work. The material isn't challenging but I have taken several similar courses so it ends up being a bit of a review of them all. There are worksheets that are several pages long and take a bit of time to find the answers. I haven't taken the final yet, but I do know that if you get below a 70% on it- you fail the course! So far I have all A's on the worksheets and I'm sure I had a few mistakes ( a couple questions on each that I haven't been able to find the answers to) so they must grade them a little easy?
You are far more brave than I. I'm completing 6 hours of Biochem this summer. As much difficulty as I am having in person, I wouldn't dare take it online. I naively thought my A's in Bio, Gen Chem, and O-Chem would help. Not so much.
The school that closest to my house is a private school and they charge about $1200 per credit (total would be close to $4k). UC berkeley extension program offer an online biochem class and it costs $800. I honestly don't have that much money and biochem is the last class I need to take. If I sign up for the online biochem class but attend the biochem lecture in the private school, do you think it's a good idea?
