Does UV endonuclease cause only a nick in the defective DNA strand where dimers formed or does it also excise the defected part?

Because First aid 2013 mentions that endonuclease excises the defective part and then DNA polymerase replaces the missing part but UW biochem mentions that DNA polymerase also excises the defective part and that endonuclease only forms nicks where there are dimers..

thoughts??
