I just graduated from undergrad and am applying this cycle for fall of 2008. I noticed that I am required to have taken biochemistry (at least 3 semesters of it). I didn't do this in undergrad and was wondering if any of you applied without completing such course requisites.

Schools like UMD say that you have to have the course completed by june 30 of the year you want to start. So can I focus on studying, getting more experience, and my application right now and take biochem in the fall or even next spring before starting school next fall hopefully? OR should I try to get biochem done before I apply too?

Has anyone had experience with such a situation and if you applied without completing the reqs did you get in or not and they told you that this is why?

Who requires biochem? And three semesters at that?

MWU and I think IU require it, maybe others that I dont know of...although definitely not 3 semesters, just 1.

LLU, MI, Arizona . . . more and more schools seem to be requiring Biochemistry.

That's why it's important that for every school you plan to apply to, you find out what their pre-requisites are! Otherwise you're just wasting money if you apply blindly without doing minimal research first.

I know that, as of 2008 application cycle, all Texas schools (UTHSC - Houston, UTHSC - San Anotnio, and starting this year Baylor College of Dentistry) require credit for 3 SEMESTER hours of Biochem before matriculation into dental school. It's a great idea to take the class in undergrad even if the dental school you are applying to does not require it because you will have to take the course in dental school - unless your school offers that ability to CLEP out of Biochem.

Every student that I have spoken with, who has finished their DS1 year, has said that taking Biochem in undergrad would have made that dental school course much easier, and if they didn't take it, they wished they would have.

Sorry yes I meant to say 1 semester of it so 3 credit hours. I know VCU and UMD require it because I was looking to apply to those and now I am worried I should post-pone submitting my application until it's done. If I take the DAT in the first half of the summer and take biochem during the second summer session around here (since the college I did ungrad at is far away and I already graduated) would you recommend waiting til I get biochem grades in or should i try to take biochem during the fall or spring semesters? I really just want to take it during the summer because it'll be faster and I'd rather focus on it and get it done.

Can I just put in progess or something for the biochem grade and still submit my application in the middle of the summer instead of the end? Will this even matter because don't they wait until the application is done to review it anyways? Also, again did any of you apply without completing all the pre-req classes? Biochem is the only one I don't have yet.

Thanks 🙂
