Hey guys,

I have a question...do you think it is necessary to know all of those carbohydrate structures as far as what they look like structurally? LIke should I know3 about mannose, galactose, arabinose, etc and what they look like? or is knowing glucose and fructose good enough? as well as knowing what comprises each disaccharide and the linkages? Do I need to know minute stuff like mannose?

I think having a rough idea of what glucose in the ring form looks like is sufficient. As far as linkages goes, I think you should just know about alpha and beta linkages.

In all honesty, its somewhat helpful because you become familiar with alpha and beta linkage. Also, it can be helpful in understanding what kind of chemistry goes on in a glycosidic linkage and during mutarotation. But I don't think you're going to get a question that specifically asks you to recall what a carbohydrate structure looks like. It is more likely you'll get a synthesis that will lead you to that structure but you can gather that information usually from the passage they provide.
