I've heard that some school will allow you to take Biochemistry instead of Organic Chemistry 2 of 2. Can anyone fill me in on the details and whether or not this is desirable? Thanks!

You'll definitely want to take Orgo II, for a couple reasons. First off, by far most schools require both semesters of orgo, and you don't want to limit yourself to applying to just the handful that don't. Second, the MCAT requires knowledge of both semesters. I would say definitely take orgo II, and then take biochem when you're a senior if you're able cuz it looks good.

Highly agree...not taking orgo II is asking for it on the MCAT.

Plus, I'm taking biochemistry now (post-orgo II and the MCAT), and even though they don't require you to know the mechanisms, it really makes a lot more sense if you do. Unless your school is very different from mine, understanding things like enolate formation, aldol reactions, amides, etc., are all involved in biochem and I didn't learn them till orgo II.

If I were you, I'd take both. You will definitely want Orgo 2 before med school (I think most of them actually require it..) and biochem is REALLY HELPFUL if you're taking the MCAT. Plus, I think it's really helpful for med school itself. You'll just be that much more familiar with the material before exams. Good luck!

in my school, we have to have finished the years worth of orgo before taking biochem. i don't know of any school that allows you to take in place of orgo.

The second semester of o-chem is usually a pre-req for biochem. Even if it isn't a pre-req at your school, it would really be in your best interest to take the o-chem first. Otherwise, those who have already taken it will have a huge advantage over you.
