Cali residents:

i have to take biochem this summer and wanted to see what you guys thought. i have 2 options that i would like to chose from, ucla and ucdavis. ucla's class is 4 units and ucdavis class is 3 units. i am required to take at least 3 units. ucla is structure and function based class where as ucdavis is metabolic pathways (krebs, glycolysis, protein syn, etc etc). i live in so cal, but i dont mind going up north for the class if i have to. what have you guys heard about both ucla and ucd's biochem classes? i'm not sure who is teaching it at ucla but in my schedule it says "DO, T.Q" as instructor. at ucdavis the prof is segel. i dont know how much of a difference the extra unit at ucla is going to make in summer, but i do know that chem is not my most fav stuff in the world. do you guys think the one extra unit is going to be a lot more work at ucla? are the classes at ucla generally harder ?

any input will be much appreciated! thanks guys.

Is that 4th hour for a lab? Because you're not going to be running gels and crap in dental school. UC Davis' sounds better to me, but I'm not from Cali, I'm just going by your descriptions.

Structures = simple, but boring.
Pathways = more interesting, harder to learn.

I know Biochemistry is just another Chemistry class, but sometimes learning is the fun part. I'd take the class with the pathways althought it's harder because then I'd at least know where some of the stuff in our body comes from. =p

How can you take a course in biochem and not study metabolic pathways? 😕

At my university we have two biochems, one for pre-meds/pre-dent/vets (400 level), and the other for non science majors (300 level).

Make sure the class you are taking is for pre-dents, not the bogus watered down version.

ya shawn both classes have pathways but the ucla one also includes structure.

the additional unit is not for lab but there is an extracomponent of discussion 2 times a week i think

From what I heard, most of those who teach at UCLA in summer are guest lecturers. They don't teach regular terms there. So UCLA students, except those who took summer classes, are probably not familiar with the instructor's name that you mentioned.

Hi Compugirl,
Are you applying to dental school by any chance? May I know if you have started the process, getting ur LOR, writing stuff, etc. If you r applying, I would suggest to stay in So Cal bcos u may not want to travel back and forth from davis to get stuff. A change in environment is not a bad thing. It just seems to be that there aint that many things going on in Davis. How come you dont consider UCSD? There are biochem classes as well(if so take metabolic cos structural professor was boring.) We have great weather, the beach, beautiful campus (UCLA has it too), and of cos the UCSD Free Dental Clinic Project. I think our course is 4 quarter units so it is like 2.7 semester unit after conversion.
