Are there many people that did not take biochem in undergrad?? If so, do you think that it would've helped you in med school?? I've heard that the biochem in undergrad and med school is totally different. Do you suggest I read a biochem book or something before I start school this fall??

Yes.

I did take biochem in undergrad (1 year not counting molecular bio and other stuff). It was my major. It did help me a lot in my med school biochem class. People who hadn't taken biochem before found the med school one challenging but survived.

Remember that there is a lot of variation in undergrad classes so you can't really compare things this way. I'm sure some undergrad biochem courses are similar to med school biochem or cover the same material (mine mostly did, but again over a full year and in more detail with different emphasis).

NO. This is like trying to prepare for a car crash by hitting your head against a wall. If you got in to med school, you can succeed at the curriculum. Wait til you get there and then do what they tell you. You do not have time or motivation before school starts to study anything in a way that will help you.

By the way this really isn't the right forum for this question.

Yes, I just realized that... But thankfully someone was able to pick apart my slew of questions and answer them accordingly. I like to read this forum better than the others, everyone on here has been through the **** that, for now, excites me. You guys are a great help, I've learned a lot here!!

I took biochem in undergrad and it did not help one bit for medical school (but this is n = 1). My undergrad biochem class consisted of memorizing the structures of all the amino acids and remembering the names and structures of every enzyme/intermediate in glycolysis and TCA, etc. There was no tie-in to total body metabolism and fed/fasted states as there was in my med school biochem class either. And in med school we didnt have to know the structures of anything (and many times only had to learn the names of rate-limiting enzymes and ccontrolled steps for minor pathways). The best thing you could do for yourself is order yourself a cheap used copy of Lippincott's Review of Biochemistry just so you have it when school starts and then do anything but try to study before school starts this fall

Agree 100% was a biochem major and felt things were so different then med school. I mean we spent a full week on the crystal structures of proteins. no full body intergration or what the missing enzymes did to the body etc.
