Biochemistry ACS final..

My biochemistry ACS exam is in 3 weeks.

I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on how to study for it and what logic I should be getting ready for.

The usual case for ACS exams is that it has almost nothing to do with the class notes, so I've spent time memorizing the glossary and what not.

I couldn't find a study guide, so I am here 😛

Any pointers would be nice-

My biochem professor was a contributor to the ACS biochem exam, but I never took it. So, this post is pointless.

His exams were tough, though. So good luck.
 
Hmmm...never took the Biochem ACS. This covers two semester's worth, right? I think the only guidance you have is what you learn in lecture. I've found that the ACS exams have simple concepts presented in complicated ways. Also, there are always like 10 questions that you've never seen before and you just have to take your best guess. This post is probably pointless too *sigh*.
 
If it's anything like the ACS quant final, it'll cover everything you've seen and then a little.
 
I loved the Ochem ACS test. 98th percentile right here. Basically, it was a lot of details we'd learned shown in weird ways. Way easier than any of my regular Ochem tests, though. I'm assuming the Biochem one should be more of the same.
 
I didn't study for the exam, but I was a good student during the semester, and I did very well. It was not that bad.
 
I'm a biochemistry major, why have I never been prompted to take an ACS exam at all?

Agreed. I scored roughly the same. I thought as far as testing your knowledge of OChem, the test was useless. We had to take the full ACS exam plus an exam our professor wrote and the professor's was heaps more difficult. For Biochem I'm no help, but having taken the gen chem and ochem ACS final I can tell you that it usually tests on basic concepts given to you in really convoluted and confusing ways.
 
I took the ACS Biochemistry exam and can offer you the following advice:

1. Review all your previous exams
2. Review all the chapters in your textbook
3. Read anything in your textbook that you didn't go over in class

The exam was mostly conceptual when I took it. I didn't have to do any calculations. A lot of the questions were tricky. I got 47/60 correct, which was the highest grade in my class and considered a good score. I was told that the national average is far below that.

i apologize for bumping this old thread, but i was wondering if they have an study guide for the biochem ACS. I know there were study guides for ACS ochem and chem, but couldnt find any for biochem?
 
I will be taking the ACS Biochem final next month and I was wondering if anyone else has any tips on how to prepare for this exam. I am using the "Biochemistry for Dummies" book as an overall review book (since there is no published study guide) and will be looking over old exams and notes as well. One of the Biochem professors at my college said that his class's average on this exam last year was a 66%, which scares me :nailbiting: For those of you who have taken the exam in recent years, did you think it was easy or hard or in between?

I got it for Ochem and scored 98 percentile 😀! Our summer class didn't even over the last two chapters in the ACS exam (to this day, I still cannot write mechanisms for esterification). I study the crap out of that tiny half inch book.

I just took the ACS Ochem final, and I can say that it's similar to prepping for the MCAT in that you need to get exposure to the question format. You said you can't find an official study guide, but you need to rethink this and work harder to find one, because the official study guides are literally the best thing to get you exposure to the question types. If you can get one, just do all the practice problems and learn the concepts behind them and you should be ok as long as you did well in the class.
 
Just took the ACS Biochem final:

1) Yes, there's an ACS sanctioned study guide for Orgo, but there IS NOT one available for biochem.
2) The mean score (from the 2007 stats) is a 31/60. 90th percentile starts in the low 40's. So, it's not a cake walk.
3) Be prepared to answer BOTH broader conceptual questions and minute details.

This is all I can legally say about the exam. I felt that the exam was certainly challenging, but not insurmountable (I don't think I got a 20 or anything). I definitely had to do some fancy footwork and clever elimination. Good luck, ye poor souls 😉
 
BUMP I am looking for one as well for next semester. My prof will tell us nothing about his own tests so I can't imagine he will be helpful with this one and it will be 45 percent of my grade for Biochem 2. Help lol....

google is your friend... maybe it's a different book but I bet the guidance holds true for your book

Also, on the official web for ACS there is NO listing for biochem (gen chem, orgo, analytical, physical only).
