On AMCAS, does Biochemistry need to be listed as Biology or Chemistry.

The "Biochemistry" course had absolutely no chemistry whatsoever, it was a standard premed biology weedout course.

Can I list it as biology if I want to? What does AMCAS say about biochem?

What department is it listed under at your school? At mine it's listed under Chemistry so I put it as Chemistry.

When in doubt, RTFM.

AMCAS clearly lists Biochem under Chemistry.

The reason I am concerned with this, is because Texas says I can use Biochemistry to complete part of the 4 semesters of biology requirement for Texas medical schools.

There was absolutely no chemistry at all in the course, it was all biology....

I did the same, my course was labeled chemistry and taught by chemistry faculty.

There is actually a Department of Biochemistry that is associated with the medical school here! We have a separate Department of Biochemistry!

Note, the course that I took USED to be offered in the biology department, before they set up the Biochemistry Department like 3 years ago. The course content has NOT changed since then ( my older bro took the course 3 yrs ago when it was in biology dept)

It doesn't matter. AMCAS says it's chem, therefore you should put it under chem.

This course was a biology course 3 yrs ago before it was moved to the new department of biochemistry they opened.

I think my school would be better than AMCAS to evaluate its own course? What should I do?

hmm just a thought ...

if the BCMP is ONE average anyway...does it really matter if you include biochem under bio or chem. I mean it's all going to be calculated together anyway right?

Or do they calculate separate bio and chem averages???

I already told you what you should do. Go ahead and list it under Biology if you want to. AMCAS will change it and your app will take longer to process, but ultimately it doesn't really affect anything.

It's under the biology department at my school. I listed it as a biology. My application was processed fine.

Yes.
I don't think it matters what your school says it is. Under HELP in the AMCAS application, I am definitely using their designations, even if I don't agree with it and even if it is different than how my school listed it.

but does it really matter what its under???? isn't BCMP one average all together? I dont think they calculate separate bio and chem averages

It has to do with consistency. Some colleges have different biochemistry courses, one for bio majors, and one for biochem/chem majors. Its to differentiate the two I suppose. In the long run, it all figures out in the BCPM, you just don't want the Adcoms to pick up on it. You want everything as truthful as possible. I know of someone who's lied and got their application pulled.

I would still go with putting biochemistry course under chemistry and follow AMCAS.

Crosslisted at my school under Biology and Chemistry.

Well, that's a dilly of a pickle. I would choose chemistry.

It's clearly Biology at my school. But I am not a fool and sure as hell do not want to question Molly's authoritay. Therefore it will be under Chem on my app.

Goodness gracious, people, it's not my "authorita" you need to worry about. The AMCAS instruction book is just very clear on how to classify Biochem, that's all.

And, really, worst case scenario is that they change it. They're not going to hunt you down and beat you or anything. Nobody's going to get rejected because they classified Biochem as BIOL.

This is not true. At my school Biochem is listed as a Bio course. Thats what I put on my AMCAS. It wasn't changed nor delayed.

Just list it with whatever your transcript says.

at my school the biochem courses are offered by the BIOCHEMISTRY department not hte biology nor the chem depts. So my transcript says BIOCHEM103. So what do I do??

Have you thought about the caribbean or possibly DO school?
