For those of you who have been accepted to an Osteopathic medical school, I was wondering if any of the schools will substitute Biochemistry for second semester Organic chemistry. I spoke with an admissions person at MSUCOM this summer(my first choice) and she said they were planning on allowing this for the incoming fall class of 2002. I was just curious if any of the other schools are entertaining this idea, or allow this substitution. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that organic II is a prerequisite for most upper level undergraduate biochemistry courses. I know it was at my undergraduate institution, as specified in the university catalog. That being said, you will most likely have to take organic II before you can register for a biochemistry course. Why substitute biochemistry if you probably have to take organic II anyway. Don't get me wrong, the more biochemistry you can take as an undergraduate, the better. It should prove useful when you start medical school, but, again, you probably have to take organic II as well. Hope this helps

jcollings,

Allow me to expound on my previous post. I have already taken Biochemistry without finishing a second semester of Organic chem. You are correct it is suppose to be a prereq., but I took the class with special permission and did well. My question has to do with taking 2nd semester organic if I don't need to. I realize I will need it for the MCAT, but I have already finished about half of 2nd sem O-chem. I had to drop it because of a sudden death in my family. Thus, I believe I can adequately prepare myself for the MCAT without taking 2nd sem. O-chem, but I need to know if any of the other schools will substitute Biochem. for 2nd sem. O-chem. That is my dilemma.

I'm sorry, Andrew. I was obviously unaware of your special circumstances. As far as Adcomms go, I don't know whether or not the substitution is acceptable. If you plan on taking a review course for the MCAT or using review course texts for self-study, all of the organic you will need to know will be part of the review curriculum. A little extra time on the organic should be sufficient.

I found the organic on the MCAT in August to be very straight forward. I just made sure that I knew all of the rules and tricks in the Kaplan review materials.

Good Luck,
Jarrod
