All you senior posters out there, how would you recommend studying for biochem and genetics? What books, questions, and any extraneous stuff you used. I planned on spending 4 days on these subjects. Advice?

I haven't taken the test yet....so take my advice for whatever its worth....

I used Rapid Review Biochem and High Yield Cell and Molecular (the older, smaller version) and was extremely pleased w/ them. I have been able to answer just about any practice question from any source w/ the info from them.

That being said, if you can get a copy of Kaplans Biochem book, it is one of the best in their series and is supposed to be near-perfect for the boards....I wish I would have gotten a copy of it earlier. (btw it only comes in the package from them....but you should be able to find someone who has it to borrow or buy from)

yeah i debated a ton on what to do for biochem and ultimately chose kaplan.....its awesome didnt take that long to read and has great ?s at the end of each chapter! i jsut got lucky nad have a set of books from a friend

I second the Kaplan Biochem recommendation. Its just enough information but not too much. Try to get the book from someone, I was lucky and was able to use my roommate's. If you're spending 4 days on those subjects, you could probably add HY cell and molec bio--I used the new edition but didn't like it too much, the smaller older edition would probably be good.

Thanks guys for your advice. I started kaplan biochem/genetics yesterday...and its taking me longer than I thought....but I also hate these topics! If you think of anything else that would help, please let me know.

I agree w/Taus. I took USMLE yesterday and there was a load of genetics on it. I wish I would of glanced at my HY cell/molec a tad more.

I used Rapid Review Biochem and High Yield Cell and Molecular (the older, smaller version) and was extremely pleased w/ them. I have been able to answer just about any practice question from any source w/ the info from them.

Is it 1999 edition of HY Cell and Mol. Bio. that you mentioned?

for classes, lippincott is the go-to book. for boards, kaplan's book is great 'cause you can get through it in 2 or 3 days and it has very clear explanations and integrations. HY cell and molec is also highly recommended around here, and i've liked what i've seen it in so far. i'll be using both.

so, looks like we have a lot of consensus. i've peeked at RR, and it looks good, but i don't think i'll have time to go through it. i've already done kaplan's books once through, so i figure i'll stick to it (familiarization is key for review IMO).

anyway, thats my $.02. good luck
