Hey folks,

I'm noticing that a fair number of school require or "recommend" biochemistry.
Question for post-bac students (especially if you are doing your bio/chem/physics/orgo in a year)

a) Do you know if an applicant is at a disadvantage at schools that "recommend" biochemistry? Do you think the "disadvantaged" status differs for a non trad post-bac student who took a year or two out to do the 4 basic required courses? (i.e., schools understand that you don't want to put off applying by another whole year just because you didn't take biochem and therefore you're not at a disadvantage)

b) Do you know if you can take biochem AFTER you apply? For example, if I go through the whole application process this summer, is there a way to indicate that I will take biochem in the fall and would that be acceptable to the school that requires biochem? Does the school just want to know that you will have completed bio chem before starting med school?

I am really curious to know how important this biochemistry requirement is...

Thanks!

Yes, biochem will probably be hard if you haven't taken it before.

Disadvantaged status refers to finances, not classes you've taken.

Yes, you can take it after you apply, as long as it's before you matriculate.

A current student came to talk to us and he recommended both biochemistry and genetics as classes that would help during the first year.

It might be helpful, I think biochem was much much more useful though.
