I'm a biochemistry major taking the 1 year version of biochemistry. In my class we study the mechanism, pathways, and regulation of integrative metabolism.

I was wondering what type of stuff is taught in dental biochemistry and what I should bother remembering?

For example, in my class we also learn about plant biochemistry like the calvin cycle because its related to the pentose phosphate pathway, but should I bother remembering it for dental school?

I would just like some pointers as to what I should keep in the back of my mind and not completely forget, like physics

I know I will have to remember the basic pathways like glycolysis, tca, ppp, lipid, nitrogen, and nucleic acid metabolism. But do I need to remember things like biochemistry protein purification techniques?

Don't worry about remembering anything for your dental school classes. It will come back to you when your there.

its nice to see people majoring in biochem and planing to attend dental school.

whenever i tell someone " my major is biochem " they will be like " Duuuude ! thats hard. go for bio ".

i don't know why the hell i just typed that.

its very hard to explain... but undergrad vs dental school biochemistry are the same class, but the things focused on are 100% different.

Like in undergrad, they will expect you to memorize all the individual enzymes for each cycle, etc etc. In dental school, they do not expect you to memorize the individual enzymes of each cycle however, they will expect you to understand the deeper concepts (its really hard to explain).

Just focus on your class and earn a high grade, this is considered an upper level biology class and you should get a high grade. Forget what you need to focus on for dental school.

You know, everyone says that, but I've found that I could not disagree more, lol.

I would have spent a lot fewer sleepless nights in D-school if I had spent more time on biochem/anatomy/physio in UG. You have so little time to absorb anything, so anything that that you already know just makes it that much easier on you.... especially in anatomy.

Damn, but taking those courses gives you a little advantage over those who haven't taken them before right? I'm eager to start learning again but I don't think I'll be picking up a book or any old notes until school starts.

Sure... it's completely up to you. I just value my sleep more than most, hehe.

If you could do it all over again, what would you have done to prepare better? Tried to review these subjects before dental school or just tried to learn them better when you had the time to study them in undergrad?

How many hours of sleep per night are we talking here?
