I will be entering medical school next year and was wondering just how hard biochem is.

Mostly I was wondering if I should brush up on my organic chemistry as it is my weakness.

i never took biochem in college, and from what i know so far, its definitely a pure memorization class. im the type that likes the stereotyped classes as really hard; i tend to find myself enjoying a challenge, but they breeze through biochem really qucikly. If you could take it in college, that would be good, it might be helpful to memorize ur amino acids, and other things. but seeing as its your last year in college, i say enjoy it, and worry about medical biochem next year- the prof will give you all that you need to do well. but yea, again, biochem isnt much about problem solving as it is memorization (i say medical physio seems to be more of a problem solver (esp for cardiac and body fluid sections)).

you won't have to worry about much organic chemistry in medical biochemistry. Certain names of reactions will pop up from time to time but you won't have to go into the mechanisms much. Organic and biochemistry are two different animals and in my personal opinion, there is no significant advantage to taking the class prior to medical school.

yea, the only reason why i think its even on the mcats is because learning it is of a similar methodology of learning as many med school classes are

There is little to no "organic chemistry" in med school biochem. Relax -- med school will teach you everything you need to know. If you must look at something, just know the names and structures of the major amino acids. Even this is overkill, though.

i agree. enjoy your last year. TRUST ME, if you ask any med student, they will tell you to enjoy your years in college, there will be no amount of studying pre-college that will prepare you correctly for med school, aside from med school material that u will get evetually in med school anwyays. See college as one of the last shreds of guilt-free fun you can have. in fact, being on SDN makes me feela little guilty as well. Anyone else have this feeling also?

Thanks that is a relief, but just to be sure is there any course in the basic sciences that has a lot of organic chem in it?

No. If you get out of college knowing basic algebra, and are ready to buckle down like you've never buckled down before, you have all the skillz required for med school.

Medical biochemistry is really easy. All you have to do is MEMORIZE EVERYTHING. Simple enough.
