Does anyone on here have access to the assessment instrument used by the Air Force known as BEST? It has been referenced a few times in articles I am using in my dissertation lit review, but I cannot find the actual measure. I found the "AFI" (I guess that stands for Air Force Instruction) but not the questions. Is it paper and pencil, structured interview, something else?

Well, after 50 views--has anyone even heard of it?

You might have better luck looking under AFMET and/or NAFMET. My understanding is that BEST is the name of the program and AFMET/NAFMET were the names of the actual screening tests. In the Air Force, the first screening phase of the BEST program would have been on the WHMC Form 3547, otherwise known as the History Opinion Inventory-Revised (HOI-R). Phases 2 and 3, if the recruit screened above the cutoff score, would have been recorded on WHMC Form 3549. In any case, the first phase of the AFMET was a scantron-type deal, while I believe that the 2nd and 3rd phases were more like complete-the-sentence tests.

One reason why those tests/forms may not be available to the general public is because the military tends to regard any of its tests as sensitive, and treats them as controlled items. I believe one of the failings of the AFMET, among many, is that the test is supposed to be "coachable". Therefore, the Air Force would have wanted to ensure that the tests did not get out there into the general public.

Wow--how do you know so much about it (if you don't mind my asking)? Are you interested in the subject of military pre-screening for mental health issues? That is some great sutff. I will get into it tomorrow using those leads. Thanks.

My interest in it is really limited to the extent that it personally affected me when I enlisted in the Air Force in the mid-90s. At some point during my Basic Training, I took a weird complete-the-sentence test with some other trainees from my flight. The sentences were somewhat memorable, such as "I believe my TI _____" and "I yearn ________", but I've never come across anyone else who knew what I was talking about when I mentioned the test. Out of curiosity, I did some research, put the pieces together, and came to the conclusion that I must have been above the cutoff score in phase I of the program and participated in phase II testing.

What I told you is really the limit of my knowledge about the subject.

yes, it appears that they are not using the same method anymore. I definitely agree that the tight lipped attitute is because of the reason you mentioned. I just have to convince people I talk to that I am a psychology intern, not a saboteur.
