It is a process of evolution.....
just looking at my bio notes..
Adaptive radiation=major diversification over a relatively short period of time by a colonization even or morphological innovation.
I think Allopatric speciation could result into an adaptive radiation. If some members of a population get separated from the rest (colonize a new area), over the generations they may differentiate so much that if they were put back together with the original species they could not reproduce with them.
Had to edit: pattern and process are different.
Pattern of evolution is defined as:
fossil record
vestigial traits
homologies
Just as a general rule, if you see a evolution question that asks about islands in any way, the answer is probably adaptive radiation. They will either talk about the galapagos or hawaii or another series of islands as an example of adaptive radiation in all questions I have seen in my studies.
