im currently having the most trouble grasping the concepts taught to us in biology. im really concerned because its only the beginning of the school year. were 1 month into school and my labs and the material in our lectures are getting harder. i dont know what to do. no matter how hard i study i still dont understand the material. the sad thing is biology has pretty much nothing to do with the career i wish to pursue (which is psychiatry). what do i do? has anyone else had this same problem where they just cant understand what is going on? i really need some good advice so if someone can reply or pm me id appreciate it.

psychiatry requires knowledge of biology. The brain is totally part of the body

what biology class are you taking?

Any new class can be hard the first time. You are probably learning a lot of material. Use tutors, your teaching assistants, your teachers, your classmates, google, wikipedia, etc. Use your resources to help you understand the concepts. It gets better with practice and exposure.

Change your study habits, get tutors, talk to the professors. Now, you thinking psychiatry doesn't require science knowledge is a bigger problem. You are required a very intimate knowledge of how the medications work on a cellular level, especially in conjunction with other non-psych meds. Psychiatrists aren't really into talk therapy as much as managing complex medical psychiatric problems. Not to mention, you still have to get through medical school.

If you are more interested in therapy aspects and behavior modification then look into psychology, clinical psych, school psych, etc. They are really cool fields and there is no shame in going that route. I have more than a couple of friends who decided to get a phd in clinical or cognitive psych and get to do really interesting things. My good friend is finishing up a masters in school psych and gets to work with and diagnose lots of stuff. There are routes to doing stuff with slightly less science focus. I will say most of these people still have a pretty good grasp on the basic science though.

In bio, if you keep writing over and over again, you will understand. Just keep rewriting, rereading again and again till you get it. And there is a Great deal of bio involved in psychology. I'm taking a Psych class now and sometimes it feels like another bio class.
