i am a student who is to begin college this fall and im trying to plan out my pre med courses as to when to take them all. The problem i am having is with general bio. I would like to take some other courses like more towards my major and my interests( major:neuroscience). I ahve looked at a few mcat practice tests and the bio section doesnt seem to be that intensive as i thought it be. Should i just forget about bio and move on with degree requirements which include the pre med requirements or go with taking bio along with chem first year?

Don't worry - everything will fall into place - you have 4 years! The most important thing you need to do is........

ENJOY COLLEGE!!!

You're only a freshman, don't worry too much about it now. Take classes that interest you with the pre-med requirements sprinkled in here and there. You don't have to take gen. bio. your first year. You will probably take the MCAT at the end of your junior year or the beginning of your senior year, so you will have plenty of time to take most, if not all, of the requirements and study for it.

here's my $0.02...
take bio and chem your first year so that in your second year you can get physics and o-chem out of the way. study over the summer between your soph and junior year and take the fall mcat. if you like what you have then you're golden and can apply through amcas the first day they open. if you don't like your score then study up and take the spring mcat and still apply the first day amcas opens. as far as your major, only you can decide what you really like and where your interests are. cheers.

AMEN to that. Don't let being a pre-med rule your life. Enjoy being an undergrad, it is a luxury that you will miss dearly once you graduate (this is coming from someone who hasn't even started med school yet!). 😀

I would recommend that you take gen bio your first year along with chem as gen bio is a prereq for many other bio courses (at least it is at my school). I am not sure what your requirements will be as a neuroscience major. If you need any bio courses at all, gen bio will likely be a prereq for those courses. Further, you need a year of bio coursework to get into med school. I believe gen bio will fill part of this requirement.

That said, it is not critical that you take gen bio your first year. You will probably have so many other gen eds to complete as a freshman that it may be hard to fit it into your schedule. I would encourage you to resist the urge to overload yourself during your first semester in college. I have seen too many incoming freshman blow it their first semester by taking a heavy load of lab courses without realizing how much time and effort they will require.

Exactly what I am doing.

lol word. 👍

when you get to bio... study with a group of people in your class... for me personally I learn better when i rehearse or teach things to people... you'll save alot of time when it comes time to memorize crap

I didn't take bio until sophomore year and I'm a bio major 🙄
I still managed to knock off physics and half of o chemduring sophomors year. Im taking the second half of o chem this fall way before the mcat in spring. And I think I'm pretty much done my bio major next semester as well. Senior year will be for minors and maybe a second major. Moral of the story: take whatever interests you right now so long as it does not completely screw you over with prerecs for your your future classes. I fully agree with the enjoy college sentiment.

do u think that by taking cell bio, genetics, and developmental bio will have me ready to take on bio section of mcat without taking a year of gen bio?
