This is seriously annoying. AMCAS lets me put down more than one race, but some school secondaries only give me one option and require me to choose. I don't mind having to put down more than one, but I don't feel like I should be forced to choose one race over the other. Why can't I be more than one ethnicity at once? I expected a bit more of a progressive outlook from these medical schools. *grumble grumble*

I know that there is nothing I can do about it, and I shouldn't make such a big deal of these things. But it definitely gave me a sour taste in my mouth when I was filling out those applications.

Check other or leave it blank. If they really want to know, they can look at the AMCAS. I agree, it is very unenlightened to limit applicants to one race as a self-description.

I think that's more to do with the person coding the secondary site and not the mentality of the school itself. Maybe call up the admissions office and ask what you should do if you want to indicate more than one race? I know my school's secondary site has had glitches and issues in the past, and the school might not know until someone tells them about it. So they might not know that it only allows you to choose one.
