I've got a problem! I went to macy's a few months ago at their massive 2 suits for the price of one sale and I didn't have any idea what color suit i would need for the interview. So i ask the 'specialist' there and keep telling him its a med school interview and i need the right suit, black probably, maybe navy blue. So the guy tells me, "Definitely black and youll want one brown suit'...WHAT?? He said since im of south asian descent, brown would go best with my skin and I said, are you sure?? and he said 'yes, certainly'.

Now, i find out that even black suits are wrong and brown is suicide! They are both from big companies and normally go for around $350, $400 but they cost me 400 total for both. What should I do? I'm trying to sell the brown suit but I havent found any buyers and I'm wondering if i should go out and buy a navy blue suit now. I'm a borderline applicant, 29Q and 3.65gpa, no amazing extrac's, never climed mount everest or even mt. st. helens. should i blow some more money on the navy blue? btw, anyone want the brown suit? :)

Dude, veg out!!! It totally doesn't matter ifyour suit is brown, grey, navy, black, tan, etc.... no one cares at your interview. If it's tasteful and doesn't scream "LOOK AT ME", you'll be fine. Hell, you could even be "daring" and wear - gasp - a crazy tie!!!!!!

Now go have a beer and write out answers to every single question you could be asked, in detail, and committ it to memory ASAP. Go!

This question should really be posted in pre-allo, but they would really eat you alive in there.

No one cares what color suit (within reason - as in no pink or purple) you wear as long as you look professional. Wear a suit that is comfortable and you feel makes you you good. I have interviewed propective students and can assure you I have no recollection as to what color suits any of them wore. Just look professional, well-groomed and at ease with yourself.

seriously.... if you think for one second that your MCAT score will impact what SUIT COLOR YOU SHOULD WEAR, you are overthinking this whole thing.

P.S> if you are this stressed about suit color, you're going to flip when it comes to ties.........

I don't think it matters much. I remember a lot of guys had black suits on during my interviews....
I had a nose piercing AND wore a black skirt/suit to my interviews and still got into most of the schools I applied to.

You have got to be freaking kidding me.

Black or brown is fine. As long as your suit isn't lime green, your probably okay.

Take a couple of deep breaths, do a reality check and try to be yourself.

Really, it doesn't matter. I wore a dark grey suit, white shirt, with burgundy belt, burgundy shoes, and a "burgundyish" tie.

Wear something you'll be comfortable in, so you'll be more relaxed for the interview. It goes to the heart of the interview, i.e. just be yourself, not who you think they want you to be. If you like black, wear that... If you prefer blue, that would be fine also... You can always go to the mens warehouse, they hooked me up nicely. And bring a friend to get a second opinion.

I think as long as you're not a "fashion assassin", you'll be fine.

I would recommend against Speedos, a bow tie, and knee high boots... But, I'm sure someone here will say that would work.

Relax.

:D

I thought for a second that the guy was talking about residency interviews, after all this forum is a relatively safe haven from pre-meds.

I wore a black suit on my interview and I'm in med school now. I saw one guy at this interview who didn't wear a suit at all, just shirt, tie, and khakis. Guess what, he was a classmate of mine the next year.

dude, nobody gives a rats ass about the color of your suit. I mean, if you're butt ugly....then mabey the color of your suit will make the difference between acceptance and rejection. but im hoping this isnt the case.

p.s. you're pretty gullible to believe whatever a salesman would tell you. im sure you would listen to him if he tried to sell you a pink suit. Eat :spam: !

I think how you present yourself (while talking with adcoms and interviewers) at an interview will be more important than how you look in your suit. Majority I have seen do where navy, but they might remember you more if you wore something different. Relax and Good luck!

wait...there's something wrong with wearing a black suit?! I wore a dark navy blue suit to all my interviews, I never knew that that was the only reason I got into med school...

within reason - as in no pink or purple

Someone at one of mine wore purple.

Seriously though just wear something that you feel confident in. A confident attitude will get you a lot further than your suit color.

I almost think it's better that you asked this here rather than the pre-allo forum. I can't imagine some of the comments they would make. If you ask them, dressing for an interview is a science.

Like everyone else said, it really doesn't matter as long as it looks sharp. When I went suit shopping the guy told me I needed to get a navy suit. I thought BS, and went to another store where I ended up getting a nice black suit and wore a silver shirt with a silver tie (not shinny or anything). In the end it looked really good, and I didn't look exactly like every other person with a navy suit, red tie, and white shirt. In fact, I got compliments on mine.

Plus, black suits are nice because you can wear them to absolutely anything... interview, business, dinner, wedding, and the list goes on.

i actually asked here by mistake but i think you guys gave good advice. i havent even practiced interviewing....whoooooooo!!! im dead!

Don't practice interviewing. Bad idea! (IMHO)

Just to second what others have said: Relax! It's not as bad as you're imagining it will be. I went into my first interview expecting a police interrogation, but actually all of my interviews so far have been basically friendly conversations.
Personally, I wore a black suit and have been accepted. :)

I have to ditto beanbean. As long as you look professional it does not matter in the least if your suit is black, brown, or blue (you might even get away with a deep eggplant... hee hee). Stop listening to whoever is giving the bogus advice about black being out, etc. If you feel good wearing it that will show in your demeanor. You will feel more confident. I personally like the idea of the brown suit with an attractive tan or cream colored shirt and colorful tie. Just remember to wear brown shoes and belt with that suit.

Good luck!!! :luck:

PS Keep the suit after you get accepted to med school so you can use it for residency interviews too.

Relax. :D

And I'm that person - haven't you seen Tucker Carlson or Raj from the apprentice lately? Bow ties are stormin' back!

Seriously though, to the OP, I would think that either suit would be fine - the content of your interview will probably be more important than how you look.

hey guys, whatever happened to the recommendation for HUNTER GREEN suits?

:D

Just don't wear this:

You should probably avoid a purple suit. The only people I've known who can manage to pull off the purple suit and look respectable were pimps. Seriously, pimps. It's probably the gold teeth or the feather that makes it work. So if you're going to wear a purple suit, make sure that you go all out...

Ignore him... I would go with the brown suit, everyone wears black. I wore a light gray one with light purple pin-stripes. (okay, I am a female) It actually made me feel a lot better than the rest of the people with the ordinary black suites. No one really cares how you look. Just shave, have a haircut, and make sure your shoes aren't too skuffed. You can tell a lot by a person's dress shoes.
