Is it common practice for Ophthalmologists to do blepharoplasties? I know someone who is getting one done, and I didn't realize this was something they were trained to do.

All ophthalmologists are trained to perform simple oculoplastic surgeries on the eyelids including blephroplasty. If you are a comprehensive ophthalmologist, it's definitely in your scope of practice to perform them as long as you are comfortable doing them.

I'd consider blepharoplasty a "bread-and-butter" oculoplastics procedure.

ENT and oral-maxillofacial surgeons repair orbital wall fractures. Some oculoplastics surgeons do face and necklifts. Plenty others plus comprehensive ophthalmologists do Botox, Restylane, Sculptra, Radiesse and Juvederm injections. I've also seen comprehensive ophthalmologists do (or attempt to do) Mohs-type excisions around the eye/cheek area. When it comes to plastics procedures...I think there's a lot of overlap between specialities.

Don't you love it though when a plastics surgeon repairs a full-thickness lid lac, then sends you the patient because he got a corneal abrasion from the sutures the plastics guy put in?

Don't you mean "cosmetic"?

When people use the term Plastic some can infer it is solely the scope of PRS. Many specialties perform cosmetic surgical procedures however as we all can agree.

Just pointing out "cosmetic surgery" may be a better term than referring to all of these things as "plastic surgery". 👍

Yes, this is routine. I do blephs too, but with my busy cataract surgery practice, I refer to my oculoplastics colleagues.
