I'm an MSIV getting ready to start in July. My program gives us all the certification classes...except BLS and they haven't mentioned the need for us to have our BLS certification renewed. Is this something you have to have? I just don't wanna pay the 30 bucks and spend 4 hours on my weekend getting a merit badge I don't need.

No! BLS is not part of ACLS...you have to know BLS for ACLS, however, but you do NOT get a BLS re-certification simply by doing ACLS. You have to take BLS separately. That is the case at every place I have encountered.

I've taken ACLS and PALS several times and each time i was required to present a current BLS card, so from my experience you need to have completed BLS prior to taking ACLS etc. Maybe there are certain places where the courses are combined, but i've never found any like that...it would be great---save some $$$$$.

According to AHA's website, you don't necessarily have to be "certified" in BLS before getting your ACLS. You do have to know BLS before taking the ACLS course, however.

Strange...your school didn't require BLS certification throughout?

I know when I took the ACLS class, they checked my BLS card first.

School required it. It's just recently expired.

I was told that they would renew my BLS during our PALS and NALS courses. I'm guessing we'll just stick around an extra 10 minutes and demonstrate CPR to the instructor and be done.

I've taken ACLS and ATLS several times and never had to show my BLS certificate (which probably expired years ago...if I even knew where it was).

That said, you do have to have the BLS skills for ACLS (or it is assumed you do).
