blueprints series, step 2 materials

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
well, here is what i am thinking....

i am certainly getting crush the boards and boards and wards.

other than that, i was hoping for some good books that i can study from during my rotations. i really need to crush step 2, am planning on taking it next fall, so i have tons of time. but, i want to CRUSH it, so i am going to focus on high yeild stuff from day 1 (which is now).

based on this info, i figured blueprints would be a good series. but, if there are some better rotation specific books out there, please reccomend them. i would really appreciate it!

Neilc, I haven't taken step 2 yet but I bought the blueprints series ahead of time to use for rotations and what not.

I didn't think BP for surgery was that bad. Obviously, I don't know what kind of depth is needed for step 2 but I like the simple format and nice illustrations. I've found it a very nice review source for TNM staging, for instance.

I'll have to second the fact, that blueprints surgery sucks. Use First Aid for Surgery. Remember also on Step II trauma is high yield. The best thing you can do for Step II is read about your patients, everyday, this is really the best way to approach this exam. Yeah, QBank / B&W / Secrets are good (closer to the exam) but the most points I got on the exam came from recalling my patients throughout my third year. Slow and Steady wins the race.

I m going through my surgery rotation this period, and although BP is far from having everything I need for my exam, the things that it has are,in my opinion, very well covered.
First aid for surgery? This book doesn t even have a section devoted to surgery. Sure, you could look up in the index when you encounter a disease that could have a surgical treatment, but BP is much better in that it only presents you with diseases that are MAINLY treated surgically(while in first there s a huge overlapping across different specialties). As for trauma, I think that BP along with Crush step 2 was pretty good.

Not First Aid for the USMLE but First Aid for the Surgery Clerkship. I think it is far and away better than Blueprints.

Amen!! Not a great book, I used for an overview during the first week, and then tossed it to the side. Read on your patients and read Recall for every case + a little extra (I looked up a stuff on the internet pertaining to my pts and read some of a barrowed Greenfield book).

We do SHELF exams and I felt this had prepped me well. There will be some on the surgical subs, so don't neglect them! Also STEP 2 does have a fair amount of trauma on it.

Good luck-
B
