Is board certification in general dentistry and dental subspecialties as well as maintenance of such certification/re-certification and continuing dental education credits required as it is in medicine for physicians?

Thank you for your reply.

Can anyone answer the other part of my question: Is board certification in general dentistry and/or dental subspecialties as well as maintenance of such certification required for dentists as it is in medicine for physicians?

There isn't really a board certification for general dentists. I can't speak definitively on the need for specialists to be board certified for licensure, but I don't believe it's required. Again, requirements will vary from state to state.

Unless you're Comp or whatever the other two services call it, then not getting board certified is the mark of career death...

But no, GPs do not need to pursue board certification. Most specialists do pursue it.

There is board certification for general dentists, but it is mostly pursued by those in the military to advance rank and/or pay grade. Most GP's in private practice do not do it.

To OP. Are you hospital admin? Each specialty area in dentistry caries its own board certification, whether or not individuals pursue it is dependent on individual. As far as general dentistry there is no well accepted/ recognized general dental board. (the board one of the above posters mentioned is fairly difficult to get unless you do a 2 year general dental residency)

This is a recognized board. All board certifications are difficult to get, that is why not all specialty graduates are board certified. And they are difficult to maintain.

The short answer is that board certificatiom is not required in dentistry - however it is highly encouraged for specialists

CE is mandatory for license renewal.

It is my understanding that to be certified by the American Board of General Dentistry one must complete an AEGD or GPR as a requirement. If that's the case, most general dentists aren't even eligible. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct. One must generally complete a residency before being certified by a board.
