I have been reading about the requirements to externship at some programs (OMFS) and noticed that they ask for board scores. What if I take my boards during early May, and want to do an externship during late May to early June? Could I still apply for the externship without knowing my board score? Is it worth my time to apply?

Also, how competitive are the most sought after externships? Do applicants often get rejected?

Thank you.

Externships at good programs usually aren't that competitive w/ regards to acceptance, but rather w/ regard to going WHEN you desire. So if you want to get a slot in early summer, competitive stats can help... but more importantly, get your app in EARLY.

armorshell: If I remember correctly, you did an externship pretty early on... did you do it after 1st year? which were your favorites?

I had not taken boards before several of my externships and no one cared. Most places want you to be there to show off the program and the application is just a formality. Go ahead and apply away (the earlier the better to garuantee the date you want).

On a related question, how did all of you deal with malpractice insurance coverage? Did your school cover you or did you have to purchase/find insurance elsewhere?

How to apply for board exam for externship for dental.
