hey guys I just bombed my first physics midterm and and I'm sorta really stuck in a situation . There are two midterms this semester and they are worth 17 percent each. Not to make excuses or anything but i had major family issues this week and had very little time to study or concentrate. I probably got close to a 20 percent on the midterm. Even if I ace everything else for the rest of the semester, I'll still only have a B at best by the end of the year. Is it best for me to get a W in this class and i'll be left with only 8 units for the semester or should I stick it out. All thoughts appreciated.

If you ever retake it. Just remember:

F=ma
D = 1/2 at^2
V = D/t
A = dV/dt

Now you are all set.

That kinda sounds like an excuse 'or anything'. Regardless...

I don't think a B is the end of the world. If you've generally done well in Physics, I'd stick it out. At the very least you should hold on until after you get the test back and see what you got and whether the curve helps you out at all.

If you're not confident in Physics at all, then it might be better to W for now and kill it next time.

Wait and see how you really did on that midterm. Who knows, you might have pulled through with a good grade.

I would talk to the professor and tell him/her the situation and see if I can retake a different version of the test... If he denies that, try to negotiate with him/her. For example, if you retook a different version of the test and got a 90+ on it, ask him/her if you can take 70 as the max grade. If worse comes to worse, try to talk him/her down with a deal on the final exam because the final exam does represent 1/3 of test 1. It doesn't make any sense for you to take a huge letter grade blow for the first test, knowing that a 20% isn't even possible for a college student (assuming you go to a good university). If he rejects all of this, I don't believe you should drop because a B isn't really that bad, as long as you have many A's to cover yourself up.

Take one more midterm and if you bomb that just run with a W. Ws aren't going to kill your application as long as you don't have an excessive string of them.

Did you try talking to your professor about why you did bad (family issues)?

you know that most classes in college are curved/z-scored right. just kill the curve on the next few exams

What constitutes a "W"? Is that after an add/drop period without grade reported?
