Hi guys,

I took the DAT today and here are my scores:

QR 14
RC 14

Biology 17
GC 18
OC 15

AA 16
PA 17

Overall GPA: 3.68
Science GPA: 3.6

I know I totally blew it 🙁 but do you think I should bother applying? I don't really know if I'll be just wasting my money by these scores.

Thanks so much in advance, I'd really appreciate your comments. Please be honest.

I would still send in your application ASAP and schedule to re-take your DAT in December. You will have to do some research and figure out when school's deadlines are for having submitted all application materials, but you have a good GPA, so if you do well on your re-take, you definitely have a shot at some schools, although your chances will become very slim. There is the possibility that you will get an acceptance, and this way you wouldn't have to waste a year. If you have the means to apply now financially, I would recommend you work on your application and submit it and keep studying for your DAT re-take.

If I were you, I would not bother to apply unless you want to retake in Dec.

What were your study habits, it looks like your GPA's are good.. Did you underestimate the DAT? I honestly think you should retake it.. and wait.

I studied only for 2 weeks for the DAT after my summer final exams were over ... so no wonder ... I know I should have waited but I wanted my application to be complete earlier ...

I am considering a re-take in Decemeber but wouldn't that be too late? will the schools just reject my application if they see my current marks? or will they ask if i'm retaking before rejecting?

It does look like the rush to be first in line backfired.

I would say that there is a very highly likely chance that they would... considering you have 2 x 14's (RC and QR) and a 15 OChem. You should seriously consider retaking.

another option is to write the canadian dat in nov (i think its nov 7 this year) there's no QR or Org and its on paper. there is a carving section (which i found really fun and easy if you practice. even practicing isn't a pain in the ass )

I think you should just focus on the DAT this winter and study hard and not worry about applying this year. Where your stats aren't fantastic the chances of you getting in are slim to say the least. If you just focus on re-taking the DAT and up your extra-curricular stuff, next year you should be pretty good. Trust me, its not worth throwing away the cash.

You need to retake. Many of those scores are below the cutoffs. Schools wouldnt even bother to wait till they got your scores if you retake in December. You might want to take the DAT next summer so you have plenty of time to study (since after 2 weeks you didnt do well).
Then apply shortly after you retake so schools have different scores to look at. Also I would mainly apply to schools that look at the newest scores since some DSs will look at all scores and some schools average them out.

Do they really average them out??? I thought it was either the most recent or the highest score?

It depends on the school. Some take the most recent, some take the best, some average. I can't imagine any school not looking at both no matter how they decide to judge. But either way if you improve it will look good. Its all about the upward trend.
