ok so i'm kinda confused when i get questions about what has a high mp but is brittle etc etc so i'm making a list of different things with their properties - feel free to add!
metallic bond - atoms like Cu2+ where there is a sea of e- and a lattice of positive charge; has properties of metals so hard, ductile, malleable, high mp and high bp,
ionic bond -give/take e- and conduct electricity in molten/solution state only, high mp
covalent bond - share e- - can be polar and have dipoles or can be nonpolar
examples of covalent crystal - graphite, diamond
molecular crystal - weak physical bonds between atoms such as H bonding/van der waals/dipole-dipole; molecular solids are usually soft, low MP, and poor conductors of electricity
metal - form basic oxides, high bp and high mp, malleable, ductile, hard and lustrous
nonmetal - form acidic oxides, in solid form they are dull, brittle, low mp, low bp, poor conductors of electricity
semimetal/metalloid - properties depend on the metals and nonmetals??
