Guys, I am having some trouble comprehending bone formation. I know there is two parts two ossification but I need some clarification on the process. Is there anyone that could give me any tips on how to comprehend this, or how to dissect the process better? This is for my undergrad gross anatomy course. Thanks

Ed

Well the way it was explained to us was that the nerve impulses from preganglionic parasympathetic fibers in the pelvic splanchnic nerves results in relaxation of the smooth muscles in the walls of the deep arteries entering the cavernous spaces. Blood is then allowed to flow freely into the cavernous spaces with resulting compression of the venous return thus resulting in varying degrees of bone formation. Hope this helps.

The process of bone formation (osteogenesis) involves three main steps:
production of the extracellular organic matrix (osteoid);
mineralization of the matrix to form bone;
and bone remodeling by resorption and reformation.
