okay. what review books should we buy? here is a list below. lets make this the official thread. once and for all, y'all can help us freshman 🙂. any thoughts on textbooks?

1) BRS Pathology
2) BRS Physiology
3) BRS Histology
4) Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology
5) Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry
6) Netter's Anatomy
7) Rohen's Photographic Anatomy Atlas.
8) Grant's Dissector
9) First Aid for Step 1
 
there are already many threads that all say it, i dont think it'll be necessary to start yet another one even if its "official"
 
Eliminate BRS Histology and grants dissector, and make Rohen optional and I think you have it. My school has it's own disection guide, so grants is useless.

no thread that i have ran into recently or in the past few months has compiled a list though. It's tougher to go searching for a list of books when there are so many threads which might have nothing to do with the book list initially so i think this is good - at least for me anyways. So please keep listing

Grant's dissector was required for us and we still thought it was pretty useless. Knowing the author of the next edition I can promise it will be much improved for future medical students.

yup. the booklist is usually hidden in some thread. so what about textbooks? thanks so far.
 
grant's dissector=waste of ~$40

use the library's copy if you really want to read that thing.

what about neuroscience, micro, and behavioral science books?

While it's true that some review books are just outright better than others (particularly for USMLE prep.), I think for class purposes a lot is going to depend on where you go to school, how each course is taught, and you're individual learning style. It's probably not a great idea to go crazy buying books until you're a little ways into the courses...

Could we make this thread a sticky? or is that unneccesary? It is pretty useful, especially for those of us who are going to share books with classmates. We can refer to this to determine what books we should buy two copies of, rather than just one.

I personally thought grant's dissector was pretty good for studying before the exam...I also liked using BRS Gross Anatomy instead of the recommended text.

Neuroscience...I liked High-yield Neuroscience by Fix. Neuro made ridiculously simple was alright.
Micro...Microbiology made ridiculously simple.
I hear high yield and BRS behavioral science are pretty good.

I also liked physiology made ridiculously simple.
I hear baby robbins is good as a quick reference for pathology

Good advice! I completely agree...for a lot of courses my class notes were sufficient.
 
I may have spent more time selecting books than actually reading them. Well, maybe not, nevertheless, I stand by this book list strongly. This is more for class than for the boards, so I guess throw in FA and you should be fine.

Physio:
Boron and Boulpaep Physiology + Costanzo's Physiology (the written one, not outline)

Biochem:
Lipincott's Biochem + HY Biochem

Cell Bio/Histo:
Kierzenbaum's Cell Biology and Histology, Wheater's Histo and Albert's Cell to be used as references if needed (in the library)

Anatomy:
Moore, Big or Little. Netter's, and Weir's Imaging Atlas (if your school tests on MRIs...)
BRS Anatomy for the boards

Embryo: HY embryo

BS: BRS Behavioral Science

Path: Big (or middle) Robbins, BRS Path, maybe Goljan's Path if you want

Micro: MMRS, Microcards

Pharm: Lipincott's Pharm, Pharmcards, Katzungs Pharm review

Immuno: the 90 pgs out of Lange's Micro + Immuno Review

Genetics: there's some Medical Genetics book that I've forgotten about, little thing in paperback

Neuro: Purves Neuroscience, Haines Atlas, HY Neuro for boards

This may not be complete, but I hope it helps
 
there is no reason to buy ANY textbook in medical school. it is perfectly acceptable and possible to do well with just review books. that being said, i think that robins path is an excellent resource if you decide you want it. your library should have several copies.

as far as the original list goes, get rid of the lippincott's pharm. it blows! the biochem book is ok, but definitely not great. the books you will use the most are brs path and phys.

i dont know how the equalizer possibly read/used all of those texts. during first year we all started out doing all of the assigned reading and the optional reading, but soon you realized you couldnt keep up. after that i relied heavily (almost exclusively) on the class syllabus.
 
The books I suggested were for both years, and I personally don't like our class notes (when we have them) so I go for the books.
 
any thoughts on netters anatomy???
 
What do you guys think about using older editions of textbooks and review books?
