Any advice on what books to read that would be helpful before starting/during residency?
also find some people and do a couple thoracotomies if you can get the time.
actually veers' advice isnt bad at all IF you can remember a bit of what you read, so read it near the start of your year.

I thought I was being sarcastic....
Sounds like you old salts are advocating preparing for life as a resident more than diagnosing and treating disease.
It's coming, and you will be unprepared regardless of what you do.
Guns, Germs, and Steel.I'm not really into Sci-Fi - anyone have suggestions for a long, engrossing paperback unrelated to medicine that I can plow through on my flight down under? I've heard "Pillars of the Earth" may fit, but I don't know much about it...
I would go with The Fountainhead (long) or Atlas Shrugged (much longer). Great books!
