Below is the budget that LLU estimates for this upcoming year:

Tuition -$34,590.00
Enrollment Fee -$2,356.00
Books and Supplies -$3,200.00
Room and Board -$10,395.00
Personal Expenses -$1,540.00
Transportation -$3,465.00

Total: $55,546.00

Will I truly need $3, 200 for books and supplies? And what types of supplies are they talking about? In terms of books I already own a Netters and Rohen atlas, and a Grant's Dissector. I'm sure my books won't add up to $3k, so what exactly are they expecting me to spend this money on?

booze and a vacation.
That is a ton for books n' stuff. You'll go through a lot of pens but 3,000 dollars seems high.

One of the biggest things they probably budget for is the diagnostic set: ophthalmoscope and otoscope. You probably don't need them, and depending on the flavor you get can cost over $500.

And to answer the question, don't expect to spend close to $3200.

That's probably the price if you buy all the books "recommended" for every class. And if you buy new. At most places your syllabi are going to cover what you need to know for most courses. You already have your anatomy lab stuff covered. I'd recommend seeing how comprehensive your syllabi are before buying any other books at all.

$3,200 seems truly outlandish. My first year spending on books was under $1000, and in retrospect there were a few I bought that I hardly ended up using at all. Highest yield was Netter's and books written by the professor teaching the course. Other than that, most were not a great investment.

By the way, congrats on LLU!👍

They might be including a laptop computer with wireless network card as one of your supplies.

This budget is likely what the school presents for financial aid qualification. Helps the feds figure how much they will be giving you.

I would suspect that that includes a laptop too.

I wouldn't think that books would run over 1500 even if you bought all the reccommended books. Probably includes a laptop, stethoscope, Oto-ophthalmoscope (which can be ridiculously expensive - DON'T BUY EVERY EXAM ROOM HAS ONE).

DON'T BUY EVERY EXAM ROOM HAS ONE.

People say this, but in my experience it isn't accurate. EDs and clinics have them handy in the rooms. The rooms up on the floors may not. (Plus if you want to practice on friends and family members at home, it's nice to have one.) Best to look into used ones rather than assume you won't need one at all.

On the floor the nursing station should have one, or at least know where to get one quickly.

Attendings never carry one around but are always able to acquire one when needed.

If you do get one, get the cheapest and smallest one you can find.

And if you're in a large, urban, underfunded hospital, the EDs and clinics may not have them either. Especially the ED.

I thought that was true too, but I asked around and a laptop isn't included in any part of the school costs. Thanks for the advice though everyone. I'll just try to allocate about $500 for supplies.

Be thankful they inflated the budget because there are ALOT of things you need that aren't budgeted for: car payment, sometimes car insurance, cell phone. They try to increase other areas to allow you to cover your other expenses.

Laptop may not be included in your budget, but they are a cost of school so if you buy one you can have your loans increased to cover the cost.

That's true. A lot of my professors said that they would mark certain textbooks as "required" to help inflate our alloted student budget.

Also, at my school's bookstore, their return policy differs between "required" books and "recommended books." You have a larger window of time to return required books, which is another reason why some of my professors mark books as "required."

I've spent less than $300 on books. As for "supplies," I'm not sure that any were really required for our first year.

Well, I'd say unless you just really want to spend 400-500$ on a piece of equiptment, its best to wait and see. I've never needed one and not been able to find it.
