I'm doing a research fellowship between second and third year, and I feel that much of my knowledge, so honed for Step 1, is fading a bit. I am fortunate to have some free time this year, so I was wondering which books are the best ones to read to refresh and to prepare for rotations next June? I'm thinking about Boards & Wards, Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, and so forth. I don't want to just go through all the textbooks listed for my rotations because that wouldn't be terribly efficient. Thanks for any suggestions!

Boards and Wards MAY be a good book but I would probably reserve it for pre STEP II studying. Obviously during your extra time you will want to be preparing for the wards but also looking ahead to the boards. Current Diagnosis and Treatment seems like quite the undertaking, if you can do it great but alternatively I would recommend Prescriptions for the Boards, a little more detailed than B&W and would be a good primer for rotations as it covers most of the third year clerkships plus you could easily get through it. I've heard some people say the Swansons Review for Family Practice is also good but I can't give you first hand knowledge.

How about J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Saga? Come on, I know you've been promising yourself you'd read it again before the third movie comes out. Do yourself a favor and relax, read for a rotation when you're in it, they won't expect you to be at an R4 level on the first day... Although, if you are feeling a bit adventurous, NMS medicine is a pretty good one too!

Read The House of God once before and once after third year. Otherwise have fun. They'll be much less of that come third year.
