Disclaimer: This advice will be school dependent, but this was my experience.

Anatomy - Netter and "Big" Moore (had good school note sets so just used this as reference not for a read through and study everything book).

Cell Bio/Genetics - None necessary, esp if you have any background in these.

Histo - School dependent. Get whatever text/atlas they tell you to.

I highly agree. Your school may actually give out syllabus that you will find helpful. For example, my histo prof. created a collection of images with caption and an accompanying histo text on a CD for us so I didn't use anything else to study for the subject. The best people to ask are the upperclassmen at your school.

Some good standard text for 1st year are:
Costanzo for physiology
Robbins for general pathology
Abbas for immunology

Netter's (unless you're lucky enough to find someone with the CD version)
BRS physiology
Bate's

If I could go back, that's all I would get. Biochem books - worthless. Neuro books - worhtless. Anatomy books (other than Netter's) - worthless. All you need for phys is the BRS, and anything you need for histo can be found on googleimages. Bear in mind, our school didn't do any micro or path first year.

For me....

Biochem: Nothing (just syllabus)

Physiology: Nothing

Histology: Wheaters

Gross Anatomy: Netters

Neuroscience: Haines

I didn't use review books at all in my first year. The syllabi for each course were sufficient for me.

Anatomy: Netter or/and Rohen
Physio: Costanzo (her book is a concise, text version of her BRS)
Histo: Ross, Kaye, Pawlina (I hated the class, but the book was really good)
Biochem: I used nothing, but the Lippincott's biochem is pretty good good

I haven't taken Path, but from what I hear, the best book is the 1998 edition of "Pathology" by Goljan. Everyone knows he's a path god and this textbook (not just notes) really brings everything together. It's hard to find for cheap--I've seen $100 to $200 used. (ISBN 0721670237)

It seems like a lot of people say that going to class is worthless...and then most of the books are worthless....so how are people studying? I know I'll find my own method, just curious.

Combination of coops and books--I also did attend a few classes (some of the professors were excellent) and used review books (you need some books to fill in the gaps)

We have a comprehensive syllabus, so we don't use many books.

The only books I found helpful were Netter's and Blumenfeld's Neuroanatomy.
